ORCID is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic professional for the position of People Operations Manager. If you like the flexibility of a remote organization and the public-service orientation of a non-profit, join us on our mission to connect research and researchers!

Who We Are

ORCID is a mission-driven, member-supported, community-governed non-profit organization. Our vision is a world where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time. Every one of ORCID’s employees is committed to that vision as well.

We believe in and operate by our three values. ORCID strives to be:

  • Inclusive: We make decisions collaboratively, involving our staff, Board, those who support our mission, and the researchers and community that are the purpose of our work. We take a global view.
  • Trusted: Privacy and researcher control underscores everything we do.
  • Open: Our work is open, transparent, and non-proprietary.

Where We’re Located

As a fully-remote organization serving researchers everywhere, ORCID is able to hire talented individuals all over the globe, and we aim to have our people located in the communities that we serve. For this role, we’re looking for someone located in either the US or the UK, where the majority of our staff are located.

The Role

ORCID is seeking a People Operations Manager to engage in a variety of HR matters to support ORCID’s global staff. The ideal candidate has experience working in a global environment, and is familiar with collaborating in a diverse international setting. If you are an HR/People generalist that likes to foster teamwork and genuine collaboration, are assertive and self-motivated, organized, dedicated, and enjoy the mission-driven environment of a fast-paced maturing non-profit organization, this could be the job for you.

The position will be part of our Operations team, reporting to the Director, Finance & Operations. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and proven success as an HR generalist at the management level.

Responsibilities

  • People Experience Strategy: Build and enhance a strong staff experience in all aspects of the employment lifecycle. Create, implement and share results of employee surveys, utilizing feedback alongside other data points to make strategic recommendations regarding ORCID’s suite of benefits, internal policies and procedures, social/fun activities, and performance management process. Through all recommendations, ensure diversity, equity and inclusion are woven into decisions.
  • Development/Training: Further ORCID’s culture of learning by assessing ORCID’s objectives and partnering with each team to develop and implement consistent strategies relating to training and development. Oversee ORCID’s Professional Development planning, and organize and/or lead staff training as appropriate on the individual, team or organizational level. Engage with external consultants as needed.
  • Full-cycle Recruiting: Assist hiring managers when needed in creating job descriptions, posting job advertisements, screening candidates, and serving as an advisor during the interview process. Manage all onboarding and offboarding protocols for staff, ensuring compliance, efficiency, and a positive candidate/staff experience throughout.
  • Performance Management: Manage the performance assessment process to ensure a high performing team and the implementation of best practices. Manage ORCID’s annual review process by evaluating ORCID’s evolving needs, providing instruction on timelines and processes to staff, and by providing guidance to managers on effective performance evaluations and options for coaching and training.
  • Policy Development: Maintain ORCID’s library of global staff policies and suggest and implement changes to reflect our values and meet the needs of our people.
  • Compliance: Ensure implementation and monitor compliance of existing ORCID policies and programs. Monitor employment regulations for our global staff and ensure our policies are in compliance with local legal frameworks. Maintain accurate employee records and job descriptions.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • 3-5 plus years of HR generalist experience
  • Experience working and engaging in global, multicultural, and virtual team environments
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple demands and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to learn and administer new systems and tools quickly
  • Fluency in English required. Additional language skills welcomed.
  • Ability to travel based upon business needs (less than 10%)

To Apply:

Please do not submit an application through the BambooHR or Indeed portal - rather, please apply via our Applied portal, found here: https://app.beapplied.com/apply/y05fskhsig?utm_source=[BambooHR]. ORCID is using Applied to de-bias our hiring process, and only applications that are submitted through Applied will be considered. When you apply, we'll ask you to submit a few high-level questions as well as a few role-specific questions that will help us assess your skills. We will ask for you to upload a resume, but this will not be a primary factor in our assessment (and will not be reviewed until later stages in the process, if necessary). ORCID is committed to reducing bias in our hiring process, and will have a small team of staff (separately) grading your responses in blinded fashion. Those who perform the best on these initial questions will then be invited to a team interview round. ORCID encourages applicants who meet some, but not all of the requirements and qualifications, to apply.

Accommodations

ORCID happily provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities, or circumstances that could require modifications to our application process or responsibilities of the role. If you need accommodations, whether during the application process itself, or potentially would need accommodations for any of the job responsibilities, please reach out to peopleops@orcid.org

Our Culture

ORCID staff are curious and collaborative, and we strive to maintain a culture of learning. We offer programs like individually-focused professional development planning, monthly “Food for Thought” learning sessions on a wide variety of topics, and access to a digital learning platform, Udemy for Business. We are flexible and family-friendly, allowing staff to shift their schedules as needed, flex their time across the calendar month, and take an hour-long paid break each day (not to mention OFF– see the benefits we provide below).

As an organization, we are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). We hold bi-annual forums, open to all staff, where our DEI plans and needs are discussed and amplified. As a fully remote organization, we also have an active committee dedicated to making our individual remote experiences as positive and productive as possible. Read more about our culture here.

Although we are geographically diverse, we are a small, cohesive community dedicated to our mission and to each other

As an open organization valuing trust and transparency, we have a privacy policy describing how we handle applicant, employee and contractor data that we invite you to review if interested.

We provide:

A family-friendly, flexible working environment, including:

  • Flexible work hours and the ability to work fully from home (when not traveling)
  • A committed and awesome team serving a community-driven organization
  • Competitive compensation & benefits, plus OFF: an ORCID-wide day off on the first Friday of each month
  • A continuous learning environment with opportunities for training & professional development
  • Tools to support our virtual office environment, including a budget to choose your preferred laptop and a remote working stipend.

Compensation

ORCID’s compensation strategy considers an applicant’s skills and experience, geographic location, as well as internal equity when assessing salary. Because we are remote and employ globally, our salary ranges will vary by location for any given role.
