Job Title: Technical Writer II

Reports to: Director of Engineering

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Technical Writer will be responsible for managing the consistency of technical content and its use across the company including engineering, product development, manufacturing, program execution and customer relations. In addition, this position will create complex technical documentation for professional audiences in government contracting, including proposals for business growth, information about the company’s capabilities for various Requests for Information (RFIs) and solicitations, scientific white papers to highlight company success with products and services, and user guides and training manuals for products and services. This position does not immediately require a DOD security clearance, but applicants must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine the needs of users for technical documentation support
  • Perform copyediting, fact checking, and as necessary rewrite materials produced by others to enforce technical compliance and style and to enhance clarity and comprehension Present proofread and formatted material and information with fine detail, accuracy, and citation.
  • Work closely with the staff to include engineering, program management, and other internal team members (technical and non-technical) to obtain an in-depth and shared understanding of systems, processes, information, and documentation requirements
  • Translate complex engineering documents into words and pictures that are easily understood.
  • Manage or revise supporting content for products to include technical drawings, such as system diagrams. Edit material prepared by other writers or employees
  • Incorporate graphs, illustrations, or photographs to increase users’ understanding of the material
  • Work quickly and efficiently in a deadline-oriented environment and adheres to established schedules
  • Collect user feedback to update and improve content
  • Display effective organizational skills, especially when taking raw data and organizing it into an audience- friendly content form
  • Maintain repository of stock writing
  • Create training material
  • Perform detailed research to find valuable points for content

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel; Visio a plus
  • Must be able to work well with others while providing critical feedback
  • Excellent writing/editing capability
  • Display effective organizational skills, especially when taking raw data and organizing it into an audience- friendly content form.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe or publishing software
  • Develop familiarity with content development software systems to create high-quality content
  • Ability to work with non-technical, technical, and engineering teams
  • This position does not immediately require a DOD security clearance, but applicants must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.

EDUATION OR FORMAL TRAINING

  • BA/BS Degree or equivalent experience, Engineering background a plus

EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years of progressive experience in Technical Writing and Communicating
  • 3 - 5 years of experience with scientific technical communication and/or documentation specific to the DoD across multiple services (i.e., Air Force, Army, etc.) is preferred
  • An understanding of ISO and Engineering Drawing Standards is preferred
