Oerth Bio is Hiring a Biostatistician Near Durham, NC

Oerth Bio (pronounced "Earth"), a joint venture between Bayer and Arvinas, is an early-stage agricultural biotechnology company. The Oerth Bio team will develop an entirely new model for global crop protection to address one of the greatest challenges facing the world: sustainably feeding the growing global population. Oerth Bio will be committed to leveraging Arvinas’ PROTAC® (PROteolysis TArgeting Chimera) protein degrader technology to create innovative, safe, and sustainable agricultural products and evaluating the potential to address resistance mechanisms in plants to existing agricultural solutions, with solutions to control weeds, insects, diseases, and abiotic stressors by leveraging the selectivity and other features of PROTAC® protein degraders.

Oerth Bio’s headquarters is located in vibrant downtown Durham, NC close to many shops, restaurants and public transportation. The holder of this position is not expected to travel significantly.

This position reports to the Director of Data Science & Modeling.

Position Background

The Biostatistician will be responsible of solving complex problems in which analysis of assay results, assay conditions, experimental situations/setup or multivariate data requires an in-depth evaluation of diverse factors and potentially the design/implementation of new analytics approaches. This position will be essential for enabling and/or further validating in vitro assays which are a key driver in the design and optimization of efficacious PROTACs for agricultural applications. He/she/they will also take an essential part in the preparation of field trials and all the corresponding data processing/modeling/analysis/ visualization in close collaboration with other data science team members as well as the product performance team. He/she/they have in-depth knowledge and experience in statistics including mastery of state-of-the-art techniques/methods/scientific theories and subject matter expertise. He/she/they will work at the interface of the data science, biochemistry, biology, and product performance teams.

Key Responsibilities, Including but not Limited to: 

  • Work on complex problems in which analysis of assay results, assay conditions, experimental protocols, and complex chemical biological data requires an in-depth evaluation of diverse factors and potentially the design/implementation of new analytics approaches 
  • Work closely with other data scientists as well as biochemistry, structural biology, and product performance scientists
  • Implement state-of-the-art statistical methods/code for designing and analyzing experiments in close collaboration with the function leaders and bench scientists
  • Develop and improve existing assays, processes, products and systems in defining, designing and enhancing our experimental/design protocols, and processing/analysis capabilities, including for our field trial experiments
  • Work collaboratively within and across different departments, participate actively in all discussions and think creatively for solutions to challenging problems
  • Provide insights, conclusions and recommendations based on data analysis/modeling/visualization, including in vitro to in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE)

The Successful Applicant

  • Ph.D. in biostatistics, statistics or applied mathematics
  • Fluency in complex data visualization and relevant software (e.g., R, Spotfire, Tableau)
  • Programming skills (Python and/or C/C ) for data manipulation, processing, modeling, and visualization
  • Strong knowledge of biology and biochemistry to communicate effectively with biologists and biochemists and help conceiving experiments
  • Proficiency with database mining, visualization, and interpretation
  • Proficiency with classical machine learning techniques/libraries
  • Familiar with modern client-based and/or web-based data visualization tools
