Summary The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for supporting ATIs existing products primarily through product improvement and cost savings projects that align with strategic company goals. Perform a range of engineering tasks in the planning and design of electro-mechanical products, electrical enclosures and cable assemblies used in robotic end effectors and tools. Provide engineering support for customer applications, manufacturing, quality, and supplier-related questions/issues. The Mechanical Engineer will work on a wide range of products and project types in support of value added engineering organizational goals. Primary Responsibilities Primarily responsible for the completion of Product Improvement and Cost Savings projects of existing products within the Sustaining Engineering group. Identify and implement processes to reduce cost and improve quality for legacy/existing products. Design and modify robotic end effectors, electrical modules and other electro-mechanical products by performing complex design engineering tasks using SolidWorks to create solid modeling and detail/assembly drawings. You will communicate with Managers, Manufacturing, Applications and Sales staff. Serve as resource for all manufacturing, application, quality, purchasing and sales questions/issues in regard to existing products. This effort spans technical tasks including engineering, logistics investigations and root cause analyses to ensure continued operation and reliability of existing products. Assist Purchasing with identifying alternate and or secondary COTS parts. Also responsible for customer-driven product development projects to support minor customizations of existing products As a Project Leader you will coordinate all phases of development including feasibility analysis, detailed design, prototypes, testing and analysis. Establish and monitor adherence to timelines and schedules. Complete all project documentation required, direct the efforts of assigned support personnel as required to ensure on time project completion, be responsible for tracking the cost of components with minimizing cost as one design criteria and work closely with all areas of the company to successfully complete projects. Communicate with Managers and the Sales staff to determine all the technical specifications for a project. Write specifications for new projects. Interface as required during the design, production, implementation and trouble shooting of the product, including plant trips as required. Prepare sketches or complete detail and layout drawings for complex products and equipment. Design and develop new models, mechanisms, or adaptations for a particular product or application. May receive general directions from Engineers, Engineering Manager or Senior Designers. Work with component suppliers, manufacturers, outside labs and other service providers as needed to assure the most cost effective, robust designs are implemented. Design fixtures and test prototypes and released products to verify design. Provide support and assistance to coworkers as appropriate to enhance the performance and success of the engineering department and the company as a whole. Perform tolerance analysis to ensure proper fit/function of completed assemblies and to minimize parts cost. Continue to learn new skills and techniques through in-house training, outside training/coursework, seminars, trade shows and appropriate use of the internet and participate in the training of other members of the engineering team in these skills. Day-to-day responsibilities: Providing Engineering support and analyses for the various types of non-conforming material reporting processes. Provide sign-off on product deviations as needed. Planning and logistical efforts related to larger Engineering Change Orders stemming from various types of non-conforming material reporting processes Go-to person to address electro-mechanical related manufacturing questions/Issues for existing products. Maintaining a digital task system/support log. Required Experience, Education, Skills, Training and Competencies Demonstrated SolidWorks solid modeling and detail/assembly drawing proficiency. Solid history designing electro-mechanical components for automation. Demonstrated knowledge of ASME Y14.5 – 2009 Standards (GD&T) Detailed analysis and problem solving skills Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment Excellent attention to detail Proficient with Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and Visio). BSME with a minimum of 2 years of electro-mechanical experience or AAS degree in engineering or equivalent with 5 years of electro-mechanical experience Travel Requirements (Preferred but not required) Limited travel (to visit customers or a trade show) Physical Requirements Must be able to lift >50 pounds.
