POSITION SUMMARY:

The Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager is responsible for driving and developing a strong safety culture for the organization. This is a key leadership role that will provide strategic direction and oversight for occupational health, safety, hygiene, environmental and sustainability issues, including federal, state, and local regulations. The ideal candidate will implement programs and training to create a safe work environment while working to develop a zero-accident work culture. He/she will review Nichols Farms and Nichols Pistachio safety and environmental programs to develop and implement strategies. The EHS Manager is responsible and accountable for ensuring the Environmental, Health, and Safety activities are performed within external regulatory requirements and internal management guidelines while collaborating with other leaders throughout the company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement programs that maintain safe working conditions and promote our employees' protection against accidents, illnesses, and injuries.
  • Engage the workforce in safety awareness and involvement with company's safety teams.
  • Oversee and manage all safety and environmental incident investigations and identify root cause - working with Department Managers to identify trends, provide recommendations, and implement strategies.
  • Lead the deployment, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of Environmental, Health, and Safety programs - ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and implement controls to monitor progress of EHS continuous improvement and compliance across the company.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and documentation of EHS programs in accordance with local, state, and Federal EPA and OSHA requirements.
  • Assist in Workers' Compensation reporting, including investigation and case management.
  • Develops, conducts/oversees, and supervises EHS Training, including external regulatory and internal management programs.
  • Monitor and document all training, maintaining recordkeeping associated with Safety, Environmental, and Health requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely health and safety recordkeeping, document management and effective case management, as well as preparing, maintaining, and submitting records required by the company and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Promote and drive continuous improvement of systems that result in the reduction of accidents and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in Plant and Farm audits as required, to include developing strategies on findings.
  • Organize and oversee safety inspections and partner with Plant and Farm Operations on implementation of equipment regarding safety standards and improvements.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with SQF (Safety Quality Food) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) established company policies and procedures.
  • Support all shifts, to include periodically providing third shift visibility/training as needed, as well as physical presence on Saturdays and/or Sundays during Harvest Season (August - October).
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment that promotes work safety and product integrity.
  • Directly supervise Safety Department - provide guidance, coaching and direction to Safety staff.
  • Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS Degree in Occupational Health, Safety Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum seven years' experience in Environmental, Health, and Safety Managerial role in food processing or manufacturing. Agricultural experience in Farm, Orchard, and Irrigation Safety preferred.
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) experience preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop cross functional relationships
    • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks and meet constant deadlines with strong attention to detail and quality control
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; able to converse effectively across all levels of the organization and with external entities

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand for periods of time at workstation, climb stairs at high heights. Ability to work and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as designated by the company. The job responsibilities for this role are performed in a manufacturing environment that may include high levels of noise as well as performing work in an outdoor environment. Working in outdoor conditions can include extreme cold, heat, or humidity; and sometimes can include working in dusty or muddy work conditions. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
