We relentlessly pursue medicines to ease the burden of debilitating diseases and disorders, because you deserve brave science. *in collaboration with AbbVie About the Role: As part of the Neuroimmunology Research Team, the individual will be a key player in assessing drug effects in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches to target inflammation and disease progression in brain disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate is expected to design, perform, and work closely with colleagues in multiple departments to support immune profiling and characterization of novel therapeutics targeting innate and adaptive immunity. The candidate will possess a breadth of laboratory experience across in vitro and ex vitro biology, with an emphasis on the use of flow cytometry and cell separation from tissue, liquid biopsies, and primary mixed glial cultures. In addition to exploring the cellular and phenotypic underpinnings of CNS inflammation, the candidate will also be presented with the opportunity to support the translational and biomarker team as well as other flow cytometry-based support roles across departments. _ Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to): Responsible for the design, optimization, and analysis of cell separation and flow cytometry experimentation, in addition to other in vitro immune-based functional assays to support the discovery and validation of drug targets Oversees flow cytometry operations including daily startup, cleaning, QC, and shutdown, maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, user education and equipment upkeep Operates, performs independent flow cytometric cell sorting of research scientist-supplied samples Provides strategic and technical guidance for the development and implementation of flow cytometry assays use in a research setting Coordinates schedules for cell sorting equipment and maintain adequate inventory of flow cytometry supplies and reagents Coordinates tissue collection, liquid biopsies from animal models, human samples, to conduct immunophenotyping and cell characterization work Partners and collaborates with internal scientists and external entities (both academic and CRO) to integrate flow-based biomarker data into an overall understanding of drug MOA and efficacy Interacts in a matrixed, dynamic, and cross-functional manner across the Neurocrine Therapeutic Areas, Research Platforms, and other groups Other duties as assigned Requirements: BS/BA degree in Biology, Life Sciences or related discipline preferably related to immunology, Cell Biology, Bioengineering or Neuroscience and 5 years of experience of use of flow cytometry in academic or biotech/pharmaceutical industry OR MS/MA degree in similar fields as above and 3 years of similar experience above OR PhD degree in in similar fields as above and/or related science discipline and some relevant experience; may include postdoc experience Hands-on experience in developing and implementing flow cytometry assays to identify and characterize membrane markers and signaling pathways in immune, glial, and neuronal cells is required Prior expertise in flow cytometry assay design, development, trouble shooting, validation and implementation on a broad array of platforms Expertise using commercial flow cytometry software such as FlowJo, FCS Express Expertise in cell isolation, population enrichment, magnetic column cell separation and culture of human or rodent blood and tissue derived primary cells such as microglia, macrophages, monocytes, splenocytes, neurons, and astrocytes Understanding of immune and blood cell lineage, some exposure to culturing iPSCs a plus Willing to learn basic immunology functional assays such as macrophage polarization assays, MLR, phagocytosis, migration, cytotoxicity Some level of exposure to other analytical methods such ELISA, MSD, multiplex bead arrays a plus Strong attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills Proactive, innovative, with good problem-solving skills Ability to work in a cross functional team and matrix environment Ability to influence others with or without authority at all levels of the organization Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills Advanced knowledge and demonstrated ability working with / recommending a variety of laboratory equipment/tools Demonstrates solid level of understanding project / group goals and methods Consistently recognizes anomalous and inconsistent results and interprets experimental outcomes Able to explain the process behind the data and implications of the results Strong knowledge of one or more scientific disciplines, becoming expert in one discipline Strong knowledge of scientific principles, methods and techniques Strong knowledge and demonstrated ability working with a variety of laboratory equipment/tools Ability to work as part of a team; may train lower levels.
