Natural Resource Governance Institute is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near New York City, NY

Position Type: Hybrid

Position Overview:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the day-to-day financial processes of the organization with a special emphasis on leading and supporting regional accounting and budgeting processes and grant/donor-level financial management with the Director of Compliance. In addition, he/she ensures that NRGI's accounting and financial information is complete and financially sound; providing accurate, financial reporting insights to enable comprehensive financial decision making.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement NRGI’s financial policies, systems and procedures; ensure effective and compliant management of NRGI’s financial resources and ensure that staff understands the policies, systems, and procedures
  • Support the Financial Controller in the identification and mitigation of financial risk; lead the finance & admin staff in registered regions to implement risk management procedures
  • Assist the Financial Controller in the annual organizational audit and in grant audits for specific donors; lead the efforts in annual audit and in-country statutory audits for registered regions
  • Assist the Financial Controller in creating corrective action plans; lead the efforts of implementation and monitoring the action plan in registered regions
  • Keep abreast of changes in financial regulations, legislation and donor requirements so as to contribute to NRGI’S financial systems improvement
  • Provide accurate, timely and meaningful financial and management information, in accordance with the GAAP and FASB rules and enabling the Senior Management Team to make effective financial decisions
  • Review financial reports and background/supporting information and submit reports to the Financial Controller highlighting areas of insight
  • Reconcile program expense trackers with budgets for donors as well as against budgets for registered regions, and report to regional budget holder and the management team
  • Support the regional finance team in the production of scheduled and ad-hoc financial reports and to Financial Controller in the supervision and validation; ensuring that reports are accurate and timely
  • Conduct reconciliations for specific donor grants, highlighting any areas for concern and recommending corrective action; ensure that reports to donors are in-line with their reporting requirements
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that all taxes and statutory payments are accurately calculated and paid in each country of operation
  • Liaise with Regional & Country Finance & Admin staff to ensure that statutory deductions are accurately calculated, withheld and transferred to local authorities.
  • Work with Program teams to support proposal writing and development of budgets for different donors; ensuring that quality activity-based budgeting is carried out with adequate provision for central costs
  • Ensure a clear understanding of donor requirements for each grant and take responsibility for monitoring compliance and maintaining ongoing good relationships with the donors concerned
  • Set up grants and donors in the financial system; this includes account mapping, procedures, design of consolidations and reporting for both NRGI and the Donor
  • Review and approve invoices and expense claims; scrutinizing all accompanying documents and checking for compliance with NRGI financial policies & procedures for registered regions
  • Oversee the payroll processing for the registered regions and assist the Financial Controller in drafting the US payroll; this includes allocating payroll costs to project for certain donor budgets

Job Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar role with a reputable medium organisation
  • Excellent track-record of implementing financial controls and processes, including payroll
  • Experience in managing grants and knowledge of donor funding rules and regulations is a plus
  • Extensive knowledge of international financial reporting standards and other accounting best practice
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in budgeting and forecasting for business operations
  • Detailed knowledge of IFRS and Tax Management
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment
