National Park Service is Hiring an IT Specialist (Customer Support) Near King Salmon, AK

This position is located in Katmai National Park and Preserve.
This is a career or career-conditional position in the competitive service.
Housing may be available for this position.
This position is being announced simultaneously to status merit candidates in announcement # AK-1537-KATM-23-11820142-ST.

Qualifications:

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/21/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either 'full-time' (or '40 hours a week') or 'part-time' with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum basic qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: Information Technology experience that demonstrates all of the following competencies: 1) Attention to Detail-thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail; 2) Customer Service-works with clients and customers to assess needs, provide information and assistance, resolve problems; knowledgeable about IT products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services; 3) Oral Communication Skills-expresses information to individuals and groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately; and 4) Problem Solving-identified problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.

EDUCATION: a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or technology management, or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems, or networks. You must include a copy of your transcripts if you select this option.
-AND-
In addition to the requirements listed above, you must also possess at least one of the education or experience requirements listed below:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: manage deployment of new workstation, server, network, storage, and backup hardware and software to the existing or additional customer base; serve as an independent technical authority for direction, decisions, and management required to ensure project success; provide advice and assistance to customers, troubleshoot complex problems, and provide technical support. You must include hours worked per week in your resume.

EDUCATION: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management, orI have such a degree that included a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. You must include a copy of your transcripts if you select this option.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Responsibilities:

As an IT Specialist (Customer Support) you will:
  • Provide support for local LAN/WAN connectivity components and troubleshoots local network connectivity issues as they arise.
  • Provide support for on-prem servers to include, but not limited to, hardware break/fix/installation, print servers, dynamic host configration protocol (DHCP) servers, and associated backup hardware and software.
  • Provide day to day helpdesk support to include, but not limited to, software install/troubleshooting, hardware break/fix issues, workstation setup/decomission, mobile device setup / troubleshooting, network printer setup, and user account provisioning and deprovisioning.
  • Provide support for on-prem phone systems to include, but not limited to, creating/deleting system users / voicemail accounts, modifying extension information, applying system updates, hardware maintenance, and troubleshooting problems that may arise.
  • Maintain Organizational Units in Active Directory to include user, computer, security group, and distribution group objects.

Katmai National Park and Preserve lies on the Alaska Peninsula 290 miles southwest of Anchorage. Katmai is known for recent volcanism, large freshwater lakes, pristine drainages, wilderness coastline and biodiversity, including abundant salmon runs and the highest density of protected brown bears in the world.

King Salmon (park headquarters) is a small community with basic amenities. There is a small grocery store and other convenience stores. The town has seasonal hotels/inns and there is a small clinic for minor medical treatment located in Naknek (15 miles away); major medical and dental facilities are available in Anchorage, AK. The cost of living in King Salmon is considered high due to its remoteness and the cost of bringing goods in. Daily commercial flights connect Anchorage with King Salmon, there is no connection to the road system. The area is remote with approximately 700 year rounds resident. Summers are busier with over 10,000 cannery workers, lodge employees and guides coming in for the season.

Katmai is a truly magical place that will give you the 'real' Alaska experience. Katmai has 4 million acres of wilderness, 500 miles of coastline, world class fishing, and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing and exploring!
