Museum of the Bible seeks a knowledgeable, collaborative, and experienced candidate to fill the position of Registrar. This position is responsible for maintaining professional standards in collections management activities in the areas of accessioning, incoming and outgoing loans, object movement, storage and care and handling of objects in the Museums custody, as well as the ethical and legal documentation issues associated with these activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Implement a collections management policy, continuously monitoring the policy for suitability to the institutions needs and conformance to applicable current laws and statutory regulations, updating and revising as appropriate. Maintain quality and accuracy of object documentation in the collections management system (TMS). Maintains collections records including loan agreements, condition reports, accession records, location changes, insurance records, transaction files, and collection inventories for collections, and for incoming and outgoing exhibitions. Manages assigned loans communication and documents alongside Director of Collections both domestic and international. Works cooperatively with Conservation and Exhibits teams to arrange transportation and shipment of objects, either incoming or outgoing. Works with curatorial staff in installation and de-installation of exhibits and temporary exhibitions. Packs and unpacks objects for loan or exhibition and serves as courier for museum loans as necessary. Works with conservators on staff or retained by the Museum to care for collections needs. Moves objects to and from storage as required for preparation, exhibit, conservation, photography, loan, or routine maintenance and rotation. Daily checks of the galleries to look for needed maintenance or issues. Maintains appropriate storage conditions for collections objects. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of collections objects under the direction of the conservator; informs curators and conservator of conservation needs. Ensures compliance with various laws and regulations pertaining to collection items such as the Endangered Species Act, U.S. Customs and related regulations, such as U.S. Fish and Wildlife regulations. Stays current with new technologies and methodologies. Passionate about the Bible and will champion our mission to invite all people to engage with the transformative power of the Bible. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a MA in museum studies or a related field. Three to five years of professional registration experience.
Qualifications
Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of a museum collection program. Manuscript, book, and ephemera experience preferred. Principles and procedures of museum artifact accessioning and deaccessioning. Methods and techniques of handling, storing and transporting artifacts. Artifact insurance rules, regulations and guidelines. Principles and procedures used in the documentation and preservation of historical artifacts. Rules and regulations governing the accession and collection of historical artifacts. TMS or related museum database, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and other basic computing skills. Principles and procedures of filing and record keeping. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Ability to: Ensure compliance with collection rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Inspect, describe and document museum collection. Oversee the accession of historical artifacts. Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations. Prepare clear and concise reports. Be flexible in context of changing schedule. Evaluate collection management needs. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Collaborate with other departments within the museum.
