Company Overview:

A diversified 4th generation farming operation in Northern California, founded in 1918 is seeking its next Operations Manager. The farm primarily produces California rice varieties, but also maintains a significant orchard segment including almonds, pecans, and walnuts. In recent years, the business has invested in infrastructure improvements and has a long history of sustainable farming practices and innovative methods to produce high quality California agriculture products. We remain strongly committed to continuing our family ownership and honoring the legacy of our founder. 

Position Overview:

The Operations Manager will be responsible for managing all logistics related to farm operations including rice, pecan, almond and walnut operations. The positions will be responsible for allocating daily labor and supervision of daily labor. Responsibilities include oversight and maintenance of facilities, fleet maintenance management, and management of safety programs and compliance. Expectations include knowledge of farm operations, farm machinery and equipment, excellent oral and written communication and high level of professionalism and integrity. Experience in the agricultural sector required. We are looking for an effective communicator who is personable, independently motivated, and is interested in being part of a successful and growing team ensuring the legacy of century old family farm. The Operations Manager will report to the General Manager and work closely with Ranch Foreman.

Responsibilities:

  • Management of daily farm operations and logistics
  • Coordination and management of safety and government compliance programs
  • Facilities and fleet/equipment maintenance program
  • Project management
  • Development of organization systems
  • Maintain responsibility for accuracy and upkeep of compliance records

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations and Employee Management

  1. Assign labor as needed to best accomplish efficient and productive farm operations established by General Manager.
  2. Directly supervise (with assistance of foreman as needed) all farm labor (approx. 12-18 people).
  3. Oversee daily timekeeping records for accuracy and allocation. Ensure time cards are compliant with breaks and lunch laws, overtime, double time.
  4. Ensure labor practices are compliant with company HR policies.
  5. Work with office staff to manage worker’s comp modifications, time off requests, and other labor compliance procedures.

Safety Compliance

  1. Implement and Oversee Comprehensive Risk Management Program: maintaining safety program, IIPP, CUPA, and all government compliance safety requirements with support of ranch foremen and office staff.
  2. Responsible for ensuring safety procedures are implemented and current: 
    1. Keep permits updated and posted when required
    2. Review notices, check due dates and posting requirements
    3. Keep all labor law notices updated and posted for visibility by employees
    4. Maintain OSHA compliance
    5. Conduct safety audits periodically
    6. Schedule and organize tailgate safety meetings
    7. Schedule and coordinate specialty safety trainings to be conducted by vendors based on our written safety programs and other programs as needed (Fit testing, CPR/first aid, heat illness, confined spaces, etc.)
    8. Maintain safety training records

Fleet Management / Equipment / Fuel:

  1. Fleet Management
    1. Schedule annual smoke test for diesel trucks
    2. Coordinate smog and DMV registrations for all company vehicles
    3. Manage CARB compliance
    4. Schedule 1 with DMV registration renewal.
    5. Maintain list of drivers for DMV pull notices
  2. Equipment
    1. Maintain accurate equipment lists
    2. Responsible for ensuring all equipment is insured as directed, including leased equipment.
    3. Create and manage equipment maintenance program
    4. Advise on long term equipment needs of farm operations
  3. Fuel
    1. Monitor fuel station and coding system.
    2. Order diesel, gasoline, propane and lubricants
    3. Arrange for disposal of waste oils/filters/fluids
    4. Prepare quarterly fuel tax refund form
    5. Complete annual Heavy Highway Vehicle Tax return to be able to include IRS stamped

Facilities

  1. Maintain facilities to high standard of cleanliness and upkeep
  2. Establish annual capital improvements and manage repairs and maintenance projects
  3. Manage projects related to facilities upkeep
  4. Work with budgets and cost comparisons to ensure projects are completed on track and on budget

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in logistics and personnel management required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to operate farm machinery and equipment
  • Analytical abilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Advanced competency in using and managing IT with an aptitude to learn new systems and procedures
  • Must have a valid California driver's license and be acceptable to the Company’s automobile liability insurance carrier
  • Bilingual a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, business, logistics or related field preferred

Compensation:

This position offers a competitive salary depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, compensation includes:
