Mechanical Design Engineer – Industrial Design

Morningstar Corp. is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer interested in working with a dedicated

engineering team developing products for the renewable energy industry. This is a great opportunity

for those with a creative and entrepreneurial spirit who want to make a significant impact in new

product development. This position is hybrid in our Jessup, MD Engineering Center.

Responsibilities:

• Design enclosures, housings, and thermal management solutions for solar charge controllers,

inverters and accessories using 3d CAD tools

• Full life cycle (design, prototype, production, and postproduction) ownership of all mechanical

designs, assemblies, and documentation across the entire company’s portfolio of products

• Optimize thermal performance of heatsinks using CFD tools such as FloEFD
• Use product lifecycle management software to document and track all designs
• Work with Manufacturing team and offshore suppliers to ensure part/assembly quality and

delivery schedules

• Work with Electrical Engineers to coordinate PCBA Design
• Work with Compliance Engineers to ensure designs meet UL 1741, IEC62109 standards
• Work with Product Management team to ensure products meet market and NEC requirements

Required Skills:

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
• 3-5 years’ experience
• Mechanical design for injection molding, casting, and extrusion
• Experience with one of the common CAD tools (such as SolidWorks, SolidEdge, CREO, etc)
• Solid understanding of thermal management principles and how to apply them
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Hands-on, positive attitude, organized work style, and attention to detail
• Ability to work alone in small team environment where people frequently work beyond

Preferred Skills:

• Thermal management of power electronics (MOSFETS, transformers, inductors, shunts, etc.)
• Passive cooling (natural convection) heatsink design
• SolidEdge CAD experience
• Strong understanding of core Electrical Engineering concepts (current, voltage, standard

package types)

• Familiarity with basic safety compliance, EMI, and installation codes
• Basic soldering skills
• Hand tool and shop experience
