Moeller Aerospace is Hiring a Tool Maker Near Harbor Springs, MI

Summary

Moeller Aerospace is a manufacturing facility specializing in precision-machined parts for the gas turbine aircraft engine and power generation industries.

This position works in a team environment to make new tooling for new product introductions to ensure the operational robustness of product builds. This role also improves different types of tools/fixtures to enable production to be as efficient as possible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Pro-active support of cost-efficient tooling strategy for parts (usability, ergonomics, mistake-proof).
  • Work with design engineering on fixture fabrication for development and/or improvement projects including providing input into design process.
  • Tool/Fixture (re)assembly including mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic assembly with new components, ensure proper fit and dimensional requirements, or adjust details to drawing tolerances.
  • Recommend modifications to existing tools/fixtures to improve part/handling issues, productivity and/or efficiency.
  • Use range of available precision instruments, gauges, equipment and devices to layout fixtures & gauges for dimensional accuracy.
  • Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing processes.
  • Provide operations support by correcting safety and ergonomic issues, providing quality enhancements and reworking purchased and fabricated parts in cooperation with engineering.
  • Tool room and equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Maintain a safe and professional working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Document actions by completing production and quality forms.
  • Disassemble, inspect, clean, repair, and reassembles tools according to established procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective and positive communication with engineering team members and operations.

Assist in the implementations and improvement of effective preventive maintenance programs for all tool room equipment.

Required Skills

  • Ability to operate Mills, Lathes, Grinders proficiently and in a safe manner. Know the operating instructions and the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Competent in reading and understanding drawings. A thorough knowledge of geometry.
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of how the job performance affects product quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Ability and desire to work with others; build and maintain positive relations.
  • SolidWorks experience and Syteline knowledge would be an asset.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision when required.
  • Able to interpret written report, correspondence, instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Exceptional attention to details and a very high developed understanding of quality.
  • Comply with the Health, Safety and Environmental Policies.
  • Assertive, optimistic, resilient and welcomes change.
  • Shows moral courage, openness, and honesty in all dealings.
  • Adaptable and flexible with a positive responsible attitude.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Understanding of production cost elements and challenges (waste, downtime, scrap and re-work).

Education and Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of operational experience required, preferably as a machinist.
  • Precision machining experience beneficial.
  • Aerospace background a plus.
  • Practical hands-on approach to problem solving.
  • Understanding and experience of 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) process.
