· Responsible for managing, training and recruiting a staff of ±20 individuals.
· Ensure effective laboratory operations, including: health and safety protocols are adhered to, environmental codes/practices are followed, managing turn-around time of results.
· Ensures all work performed by laboratory staff is of a high standard.
· Provides staff training and development programs including counseling, performance evaluations and taking corrective action when required.
· Implement and develop quality systems together with QC manager.
· Responsible for CAPEX and OPEX budgets on all laboratory operations and maintaining of these budgets.
· Proficient with all laboratory techniques associated with mineral laboratories.
· Ensure the laboratory is a clean and sterile working environment.
· Arranges for the purchase of laboratory chemicals and makes recommendations for the purchase of new equipment.
· Perform statistical analysis to review the performance of the laboratory with regards to the quality, precision and accuracy of the data.
· Maintain and manage all laboratory equipment to ensure a high percentage of availability and utilization.
· Assist with all laboratory analysis when appropriate, especially during commissioning phase of the laboratory.
· Implementation of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) for reporting of laboratory results.
Qualifications & Experience:
· Minimum B.Sc. in Chemistry (preferred) or equivalent.
· 3 years of laboratory manager experience or similar position.
· Candidate would ideally have 15 years of demonstrated post graduate experience as a Chemist or Analytical Chemist working within the Mining and/or Exploration sectors.
· Experience with LIMS, industry specific Databases and MS Office.
· Strong experience in a mineral assay laboratory.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Can-do attitude to solve problems.
· Working knowledge on various instrumentation such as ICP/MS, ICP/OES, AAS, XRF and other laboratory instrumentation associate with a mineral laboratory would be beneficial.
Preferred:
· MSHA certification
· Experience in ISO certification processes 9001
· Experience with EPA and Hazardous Waste
