Position Summary
The Speech Language Pathologist Works to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social
communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders.
Demonstrates accountability for and contributes to program development, quality improvement, problem solving and
productivity enhancement in a flexible interdisciplinary environment.
Essential Duties/Functions
• Conducts initial assessments.
• Evaluates levels of swallowing, speech and language difficulty.
• Identifies treatment options.
• Creates and carries out individualized treatment plans addressing specific functional needs.
• Contributes to interdisciplinary care plans.
• Provides appropriate therapeutic interventions.
• Teaches patients how to make sounds while improving their voices and maintaining fluency.
• Helps individuals improve sentence structure and vocabulary used in written and oral language.
• Works with adults and children in developing and strengthening muscles used to swallow.
• Evaluates patient response to treatment and makes adjustments as necessary.
• Documents the course of patient care, including progress made and continuing need for treatment.
• Provides patient and family education on tasks and resources that will assist with continued functional
independence.
• Counsels individuals and families on ways to cope with swallowing and communication disorders.
• May work with people who do not have a speech, language or swallowing disorder, but want to learn how to
communication more effectively
• Works collaboratively with other departments.
• Contributes to the delivery of cost-effective care.
• Reports and complaints/grievances made by the residents to the Therapy Program Director. Reports incidents
of suspected incidents of resident abuse to the Therapy Program Director and/or the Executive Director
immediately.
• Travel, as needed, to other campus locations and/or to home health assignments in the designated territory
• Additional job duties as assigned.
