SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE

The Custodian is responsible for providing a clean, attractive and safe campus environment by performing general and detailed custodial work in academic buildings, apartment buildings and grounds. The Custodian must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Cleans offices, classrooms, apartments, restrooms, common areas, lounges, dining rooms, kitchens, showers, etc.
• Floor maintenance including; dust mopping, burnishing, stripping, scrubbing, refinishing, and/or recoating floors using various types of equipment. 
• Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of and respect for other cultures and diverse backgrounds. 
• Ensures that all custodial staff have access to and are using clean and functional personal protective equipment (PPE) at the correct times. 
• Contributes to the department’s ability to ensure primary custodial services continue in an emergency situation. 
• Cleans and dusts furniture, door trim, and classroom equipment.
• Cleans glass. Dust and/or wash blinds as needed.
• Cleans interior wall spaces, doors, and vents, working on ladders and scaffolding as required.
• Cleans, sanitizes and services lavatories, toilet stalls, and restrooms, including potential biohazard cleanup.
• Collects and disposes of trash, recycling, and compost. Cleans trash containers and replaces liners.
• Moves supplies and equipment as needed.
• Operates various kinds of equipment including; vacuum cleaners, backpack vacuums, rotary floor machines, auto-scrubbers, burnishers, pressure washers, extension poles, ladders, light duty spot extractors, etc.
• Works primarily in an independent manner with team cleaning occuring at various times throughout the year. 
• Takes care of the assigned area daily following specific schedules, but must be flexible to the changing needs of the college and fill in for absent staff and assist others when needed.
• Seasonal activities as requested including such as snow/ice removal, watering of grounds, shrub trimming, weeding.
• Cleans fleet vehicles.
• Reports items that need repair or could cause a health or security problem.
• Available to work additional hours around key campus event periods. Black out periods for paid time off benefits may apply to these periods. Events include but are not limited to:
  • Campus move in 
  • Move out dates
  • Art Sale
  • Art Auction
  • Commencement
  • Winter closure period 
• Available to work after hours and/or on weekends in emergency situations, including but not limited to:
  • Severe weather conditions
  • Snow removal
  • Flooding/water damage
  • Fire/building damage
  • Blood borne pathogen clean-up
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor or Custodial Services Coordinator.
• Represents MCAD’s vision, purpose, and values in day to day work and interactions with MCAD students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community. 

Requirements

EDUCATION

High school diploma, or equivalent, preferred.

EXPERIENCE

• Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and work efficiently. 
• Strong general work history preferred. 
• Prior custodial experience is preferred, but not required. 

EVALUATION

• Certification/Licensure not required for this position. 

ENVIRONMENT

This position operates predominantly on MCAD's campus grounds, using both internal and external facilities, with occasional exposure to weather conditions such as rain, snow, etc. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role will at times use standard office equipment such as computers and phones, and depending on the role may require the use of various tools or machinery. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
