Equipment Operator

Summary

This position operates the yard’s heavy equipment in a safe and professional manner

Principal Working Relationships

• Supervisor Campaign: Shift Yard Leadperson, Yard Supervisor
• Supervisor Inter-campaign: Yard Supervisor, Shift Maintenance Supervisor, or other equivalent supervisor
• Others at Minn-Dak: Coal Handler, Yardperson
• Others: Truck drivers

Essential Job Duties

• The Equipment Operator operates the front-end loader and/or locomotive.
• The Equipment Operator must be knowledgeable about, and safely and professionally operate the front-end loader in the following yard activities:

1. Stockpiling and reclaiming coal, coke, and limestone in and from designated areas.
2. Loading, unloading, and moving materials with the loader forks.
3. Pickup, movement, and loading of rock and trash, snow, pulp, beet trash, waste lime, dirt, etc.
4. Moving railcars

• The Equipment Operator must be knowledgeable about, and safely and professionally operate the locomotive in Minn-Dak’s railroad operations.
• Assist the Shift Yard Leadperson in his/her duties.
• Assure that all areas are kept clean within the food safety and sanitation guidelines.
• Complete reports as required.
• Develop the process, mechanical, and yard knowledge and skills of self and others through training.
• Use people, time, equipment, and material in the most efficient manner.
• Report mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, environmental, food safety, feed safety, operational problems, and unsafe conditions to supervisor.
• Good attendance, safety, disciplinary, and overall employment records
• Other duties as required by the business.
• Adhere to all company policies and all safety, food safety, feed safety, and sanitation rules and programs

Qualifications

• High school education or equivalent.
• Process and yard operations experience desired
• Prior satisfactory training and competent fill-in as Equipment Operator.
• Successful completion of Minn-Dak front-end loader safety training.
• Should be motivated, willing, enthusiastic, and promotable.
• Good attendance, safety, disciplinary, and overall employment records.
• Ability to communicate with, and work cohesively with others.
• Good vision and hearing.
• Inter-campaign maintenance skills greater than or equal to Mechanic IV.
• Organized with excellent time management skills
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels

Physical Demands and Expectations

• Able to bend and lift – 20 to 100 pounds

• Able to climb stairs

• Able to work in temperature extremes (cold and hot)

• Able to work in noisy and dusty conditions

• Able to work on rotating shifts up to six days per week. A normal shift will consist of eight hours with a scheduled sixth day every four weeks
