Overview

The Instructional Designer assists faculty, staff, and administration in designing high-quality instructional and training materials that support successful student and College outcomes. The Instructional Designer acts as part of Academic Affairs, but also works with Information Technology (including the HelpDesk), to provide consultation and technology support to stakeholders of the College.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Academic Affairs and departments in development of effective courses and instructional materials for a variety of delivery methods (online, hybrid, face-to-face), referencing current quality standards, with an emphasis in online/hybrid course development.
  • Assists Academic Affairs in development of effective training and instructional materials for a variety of delivery methods (online, hybrid, face-to-face), referencing current quality standards.
  • Assists with the identification of instructional outcomes, and the selection and application of appropriate designs, technologies, and assessments.
  • Facilitates effective application of pedagogy, andragogy, and instructional design theory to the design and instruction process, authoring enhancement proposals for existing materials as appropriate.
  • Works closely with faculty and administrators to address professional development needs for distance education.
  • Supports faculty, staff, and administration in maintaining expertise in instructional techniques and technologies through research, evaluation, training, development of instructional materials, and communication of evolutions and opportunities as appropriate.
  • Assists with user experience administration of the Learning Management System (LMS), Moodle, and other day-to-day operations of Academic Affairs as requested by the Associate Dean.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of departmental objectives, policies, procedures and standards; recommends changes to departmental procedures as necessary to improve the efficacy of the department’s goals and initiatives.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization’s policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Knowledge of pedagogy, andragogy, and instructional design theory, with ability to effectively apply these to instructional materials.
    • Familiarity with learning management systems and instructional technologies.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team-based, collaborative environment, with individuals from a variety of disciplines & varying levels of technology aptitude.
    • Knowledge of basic HTML, with some web and graphic design.
    • Demonstrated skill with oral, written, and instructional communications, with a customer service orientation.
    • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, a variety of assessment strategies and methodologies.
    • Demonstrated ability to present content in an effective way.
    • Demonstrated creativity in meeting position requirements.
    • Knowledge of best accessibility practices and WCAG 2.1 expectations.

    Education, Certification, Licensure:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design or similar field required. Master’s degree preferred
    • Course work in Instructional Design, Education, Communications, Technology, or a related field preferred.

    Experience:

    Minimum of 2 years of experience comprised in the following areas:

    • Successful experience teaching at the college level or K-12.
    • Experience teaching online or hybrid courses is highly preferred.
    • Previous use of a variety of educational technologies, including use of Content and Learning Management Systems.
    • Experience creating training materials for online and mobile learning.
    • Experience developing, facilitating, and assessing training.
    • Successful experience working creatively and collaboratively with faculty and educational administrators as part of a team environment.
    • Successful experience with small-scale project management & quality enhancement preferred.
    • Experience with Camtasia Studio
    • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
    • Experience with Articulate 360 preferred.
    • Experience with Google Drive required.
    • Experience with front-end web development is a plus but not required
    • AR, VR, and XR experience is a plus, but not required.

    Working Environment:

    • The job responsibilities of this position are performed in an office environment which requires a professional image and demeanor, on-time attendance and reliability. The environment has minimal, if any, discomfort due to heat, cold or dust. There is minimal noise within the environment.
    • There may be occasional travel to other college locations for meetings.
    • There may be occasional travel for conferences/training.
    • Duties are performed in an independent atmosphere without close direct supervision.
    • The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (5- 45 pounds).
    • Must meet reasonable and sometimes shifting deadlines, quotas, or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some unpleasant situations.
    • Typical work schedule is 8:00am – 4:30pm with flexible or extended hours as needed by department demands.
