The Miami Seaquarium is seeking a veterinary assistant to join the Animal Health Department. This is a full-time hourly position with benefits reporting directly to theAttending Veterinarians.The veterinary assistant will support the Miami Seaquarium’s mission by providing quality veterinary care to the Seaquarium’s animals under the supervision of the attending veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform data entry in order to maintain complete and current records using Tracks Software
  • Perform daily housekeeping and maintenance for the hospital (including offices, animal and examination areas) and equipment (laboratory and imaging equipment) including maintaining certain areas in aseptic conditions and servicing medical and laboratory equipment
  • Perform all duties related to purchasing of pharmaceuticals, hospital and laboratory supplies, and disposing of expired drugs and supplies
  • Perform laboratory diagnostic evaluation including in-house hematology, blood chemistry, cytology, and fecal examinations, as well as preparing samples for submission to outside laboratories.
  • Assist with the daily medical care of resident and rehabilitating animals- including but not limited to medication dispensing/administration, sample scheduling and collection, sample processing, diagnostic and medical procedures
  • Maintain surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Assist husbandry staff with animal training plans that include medical care elements
  • Maintain biohazardous waste and sharps disposal program
  • Adhere to all OSHA, USDA, DEA and FWC regulations and make recommendations for work orders to ensure compliance in all areas
  • Help maintain a program of animal health maintenance including the scheduling of annual physicals, rechecks, procedures, etc.
  • Participate in various PR and media events including professional interviews as deemed necessary or appropriate by the Attending Veterinarians

The Veterinary Assistant will also be cross-trained as needed to participate in the following:

  • Assist in veterinary procedures including chemical or physical restraint of animals and monitor physiological signs of immobilized animals
  • Obtain diagnostic imaging of animals using appropriate radiographic technique
  • Assist during surgical procedures under the guidance of attending veterinarians
  • Perform post-mortem examinations
  • Obtain diagnostic samples
  • Perform ultrasonic examinations
  • Participate in the rapid response to all resident and stranded animal events including those that occur during non-scheduled times of work or outside of MSQ’s operating hours
  • This position is deemed essential personnel and MUST report to work during emergency situations and/or holidays/weekends.

Other Requirements

  • Apply comparative veterinary technical skills to diverse collection of animals (cetaceans, pinnipeds, elasmobranchs, avian, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and/or holidays as needed; must also be able to share a 24/7 on-call schedule in case of emergency situations
  • Highly organized, detailed-oriented, with excellent time-management skills Complete assignments within an appropriate time frame
  • Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally and follow complex instructions
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently in the absence of direct supervision
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Accredited Bachelor's or associate’s degree
  • Preferred minimum of 1 year work experience in a veterinary hospital or zoological facility,

Hours and Availability:

Have 5 days of unrestricted availability to include weekends and holidays.

40 hours per week.

Overtime hours may be necessary upon business need.
