Year 1 Pay Rate $18/Hr.

Apprenticeship requirements to reach full Journeyman:

Classroom Requirements: 144 Hours/Year for 3 years

On the Job Training: Minimum 1,500 Hours/Year for 3 years

Requirements to enter apprentice program:

• 18 years of age
• High School Graduate or its equivalent
• Must have strong work ethics, reliable, honest, detail orientated, well organized and a self-starter.
• Must be able to pass a background check, physical, and drug test
• Must have and maintain a valid driver s license and clean driving record

As will all Metro employees, the Apprentice is to follow all OSHA and Metro Pavers regulations, policies, and procedures.

Preferred Skills / Key Competencies:

• Ability to work over 40 hours per week including Saturdays and Sundays if needed for the job
• Demonstrates good communication skills and teamwork
• Reliability, attention to detail, and stress tolerance
• Foster positive communications and relationships with team members.

Physical Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the skills and abilities required. Metro Pavers, Inc. requires a pre-employment physical for all heavy-lifting positions before employment may begin. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the following essential functions:

• Occasional twisting, pulling, and climbing, up to 60% of the time
• Standing, climbing, and/or walking for up to 8 hours a day occasionally reading fine print, viewing indirect and direct sunlight, and working regularly on a computer and/or tablet
• Lifting 80 Lbs. on a regular basis
• Being exposed to outdoor elements (hot/cold weather, noisy, rain, dusty, etc.) for up to 8 hours a day
• Typing on the computer/tablet
• Often working from levels over 4 feet from the ground (such as a ladder)

Visual requirements-must be able to pass a normal visual acuity test, must not have any nighttime driving restrictions on driver s license.

Skills and education acquired upon completion of apprenticeship:

• Detailed knowledge and understanding of concrete paving construction technics. (See full Apprenticeship Curriculum for more details)
• 10-hour OSHA Certification
• First Aid, CPR and AED Certification
• Certified Cement Mason Journeyman issued by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship

Once all requirements are completed, Journeyman certification is awarded and may perform any of the following duties without assistance:

• Performs Strike-offs a per standard operating procedures (SOPS)
• Rolls curb
• Performs Texturing (Tine, Broom, Etc.), may apply cure
• Performs Bullfloat/Handfloat operations, leveling
• May assist in loading and off-loading tools, equipment, materials, and other supplies
• May assist in Pre-paving operations, to include setting formwork, stringline, grade/subgrade preparation, setting of reinforcement bars, and baskets
• Safely operates a motor vehicle and/or skid loaders
• Assists as required in jointing operations, such as sawing, joint cleaning and sealing and bulkhead placement
• Uses various hand and power tools
• Reads paving plans, hubs, joint plans, perform mathematical functions to determine concrete volume and identify materials requirements for paving sites
• In depth use of safe work practices in the construction industry
• In depth knowledge of concrete materials, properties, specifications, and application of knowledge toward the development of concrete pavements, sidewalks, Driveways, Approaches, Curb & Gutters
• Other in-depth knowledge related to the concrete paving industry
