Mermet Corp. is Hiring a Remote Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

General Summary

General – The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is an exempt position responsible for performing Environmental Health and Safety related guidance and technical support in partnership with the leaders and EHS Committee members for Mermet. Will conduct effective training on various safety topics to employees and leaders to advance the site safety culture.
Will coordinate EHS trending, program updates and manage associate records.

Policy Making Responsibility – The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for developing, maintaining and updating all EHS procedures.

Decision Making Responsibility – Routine decisions include, but are not limited to, decisions in regard to OSHA regulations and other safety standards.

Supervisory Responsibility – There are no Supervisory responsibilities.

Safety – Employees are responsible for individual compliance with all safety rules, regulations and policy procedures.

Essential Responsibilities
The essential functions of this position may include any or all of the following, to be performed alone, or with assistance from upper management.

Task
A) Provide support to all employees in any EHS matter by acting as a technical and procedural resource.
B) Help apply OSHA regulations and other safety standards to the needs of Operations, facilities, Engineering, Maintenance and other areas.
C) Develop, maintain and update EHS procedures – guide changes and updates that are needed to the Safety Procedures due to business or regulatory changes.
Conduct research on technical topics and coordinate with stakeholders regarding procedure changes.

D) Develop and provide EHS support including facilitating JHAs, area inspections and checklist, compliance questions, procedure or PPE guidance, machine or process changes.

E) Investigates injuries with HR and supervisors to assist in identifying incident root causes and potential corrective actions, focusing on safety system improvements.

F) Provides support to supervisors and coordinators regarding the reporting and management of injuries and incidents.

G) Manages the system for logging and trending injury and hazard identifications and inspections. Maintains the OSHA 300 logs and associated tracking and generates monthly safety statistics reports and dashboard.

H) Lead collaborative groups by being an inspiring leader that can motivate others; collaborate to obtain optimal results from your team through respect and confident, competent, and diplomatic interactions.

I) Leads industrial hygiene program, combustible dust management, and safe use of chemicals to protect employee health.
J) Coordinates EHS committee meetings, working with the Committee Chairperson to ensure schedules, agenda and handouts are addressed.
K) Works in partnership with internal departments including engineering, facilities, operations, maintenance, and human resources. Maintain positive relationships with external entities such as regulatory agencies, vendors and professional organizations.

L) Develop the annual safety plan, strategy and goals.
M) Manages environmental programs such as sustainability, air permitting, EPCRA reporting, recycling, hazardous and non-hazardous waste management.
N) Works with regulators, vendors, and internal constituents to meet regulatory and business needs.
O) Lead our annual ESAFE program, process, reporting, records, etc.
P) Work with Marketing and the Human Resource Manager to develop site-wide signage – print and digital – for permanent posting and temporary message / safety campaigns, etc.

Q) Research and present recommendations for third party safety related programs, events, training, etc.

Essential Physical Demands and Working Conditions2

In this position, the employee will be subjected to physical demands requiring:
Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds
Ability to perform standard office body movements: constant sitting at desk and using computer keyboard o frequent standing and walking around, occasional bending, squatting, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing

Ability to use a computer including visual acuity and hand-eye coordination
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English
Ability to tolerate moderate office and production floor noise levels

Hours of work – The normal work hours for this position are 40 per week, M – F, beginning daily at 7:30 AM. Occasional overnight travel is required. Travel is estimated to be approximately 5% of work time. A (1) day per week work from home schedule is optional upon request.

Education, Experience and Skills
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist position has the following required (or preferred, as indicated) education, experience and skills:

Education:
Required: A four-year bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or in a related scientific or technical field, such as engineering, biology or chemistry from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience.

Preferred: CSP or ASP, or other safety certification.

Experience:
Required:

Three years EHS experience within a manufacturing environment
Project management experience

Preferred:
Industry knowledge – chemical or textiles

Skills:
Required:

Solid knowledge of manufacturing processes and industrial safety.
Solid knowledge of federal, state and local environmental, health and safety standards.
Solid knowledge of, and experience performing safety inspections and audits.
Solid knowledge of computer programs and applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Solid knowledge of writing procedures, reports and communications.
Basic knowledge of project management in order to establish timelines for various projects.
Ability to maintain trending, statistical, and other records.
Skill in developing and maintaining effective work relationships.
Ability to conduct presentations before large groups as a department representative.
Ability to work with limited supervision to complete assignments.
Ability to deal with highly confidential and sensitive information.
Ability to demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and personal initiative to undertake and complete work assignments.
Ability to identify, analyze measure and control, occupational health and safety risks within the workplace.
Ability to communicate complex information in a way that is easy to understand for a wide range of audiences with different levels of education, life experiences and language.

Ability to demonstrate teamwork and to work independently to achieve desired outcomes and results.

Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $67,000.00 - $81,000.00 per year
