Mercy For Animals is Hiring a Remote Philanthropy Officer

Remote in the United States

Initial Application Review: Thursday, August 11, 2022

Mercy For Animals aims to end industrial animal agriculture by constructing a just and sustainable food system. We envision a world where animals are respected, protected, and free.

As a leading farmed animal advocacy organization, we know that achieving this goal requires a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment—one that welcomes and sparks new perspectives and innovative ideas. If you are passionate about our mission, driven to make a big impact for animals, and eager to be part of a dedicated team, join us!

We currently seek a philanthropy officer to join our development team. In this role, you will help advance the work of Mercy For Animals by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts ($25,000 and above) and creating and sustaining long-term relationships with major donors.

You will do invaluable work:

  • Manage a portfolio of 75–125 major-gift donors and prospects with giving capacity of $25,000 or more
  • Create and execute annual strategies for all portfolio donors, including monthly benchmarks and reviews
  • Meet or exceed monthly goals for visits, solicitations, and proposals
  • Consistently review portfolio, cultivate new prospects, and disqualify others as necessary
  • Develop and draft strategies and plans for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation meetings with donors
  • Involve directors in the cultivation and solicitation process whenever appropriate
  • Manage senior leadership major-gifts work, coordinating and scheduling visits
  • Assist with management of Mercy For Animals’ legacy giving program, employing a deep understanding of the principles and techniques associated with planned giving and financial and estate planning
  • Serve as event-planning liaison for major-donor fundraising events
  • Maintain donor data and contacts in the fundraising database, and prepare funding proposals and stewardship reports
  • Serve as a member of the development project team to assist with fundraising appeal planning and execution, donor relations, database conversion, and other joint projects within the department
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures
  • Perform any other duties assigned by team leader

Your qualifications will take our development team to the next level:

  • College degree and a minimum of five years’ experience working as a major-gifts or philanthropy officer
  • CFRE certification (preferred)
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Outgoing and friendly personality
  • Experience writing fundraising proposals
  • Excellent ability to build rapport with donors, volunteers, and colleagues
  • Collaborative attitude and drive to be a team player
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure of constant deadlines, excellent organizational and time-management skills, and careful attention to detail
  • Ability to travel one to two times per month and work some evenings and weekends
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Mercy For Animals
  • Commitment to continued personal, organizational, and movement-wide growth in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice principles

About Your Team Leader

Caitlin has spent her professional career pursuing her lifelong passion: animal protection. For many years, she has dedicated herself to raising funds to help animals both locally and globally, with a focus on bringing supporters closer to the causes they love most. She has impacted a wide range of animals in need—from local homeless dogs and cats to lions, tigers, and other exotic animals in abandoned roadside zoos around the world. Caitlin enjoys using her years of experience to help farmed animals and build a compassionate food system at Mercy For Animals.

A graduate of Boston College, Caitlin resides in Watertown, Massachusetts, with her husband and their twin daughters.

Compensation and Benefits

Earn an annual salary of $103,500–$116,500, depending on qualifications, and enjoy a commute-free life as a remote team member. In addition to a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will be able to take part in our benefits package, including no- or low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; generous paid time off and sick leave; and a 401(k) retirement plan, with a dollar-to-dollar employer match of up to 3 percent of your annual salary.

Application Details

We consider traditional and nontraditional qualifications and carefully review each application, resume, and cover letter. Feel encouraged to go outside a traditional cover letter and state how you would add to our culture; what we would gain from having you on our team; and how you align with our organizational vision, mission, and values.

Our Commitment to You

Mercy For Animals is a globally minded organization. We are committed to the principles of equity and justice, and our culture celebrates authenticity—enabling every team member to shine. All employment decisions are based solely on individual qualifications, job needs, and job requirements, and potential team members of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, veteran status, and ability are encouraged to apply. We strive to include candidates from historically marginalized communities and those from or in communities impacted by environmental, social, and economic injustice.

Come as you are, and help us transform our society and construct a truly compassionate food system.
