Meharry Medical College is Hiring a Coordinator, Research Communications Near Nashville, TN

The Research Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing, creating and producing written science content including audio-visual materials and scientific presentations, providing editorial services on scientific media and press reports, and coordinating engagement activities related to new strategic research initiatives that support the research and innovation missions of Meharry Medical College. The incumbent will work collaboratively and creatively in coordination with the leadership team to successfully complete large-scale projects. He/she should be capable of working independently to manage competing priorities, solve problems, and stay current with science and technology developments. H/She will help educate internal and external audiences about Meharry Medical College research and innovation initiatives through outreach activities, presentations, community engagement programs, and exposition. This is the perfect role for anyone who wants a broad scope of ownership and is passionate about equity in health and education and making an impact on society and underrepresented communities. This person will directly report to the Senior Vice President of Research and Innovation (SVPRI) at Meharry Medical College.

  • Research, create and edit content for print and online publication. This includes articles on scientific research and researchers; audio-visual materials and scientific presentations; coverage of events; interviews with researchers; social media content; creating press releases on awards, grants, and developments, and related responsibilities.
  • Support communications functions by developing a variety of materials for print and web that increase the visibility, impact, and awareness of Meharry’s research and innovation efforts.
  • Write and edit science content to be used for outreach and education for a variety of venues, including online platforms, public events, targeted workshops, displays, and presentations.
Problem Solving:
  • Assist in problem resolution efforts as they may arise. Work with team members to develop new sections for and to proof completed grant proposals.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.

  • Basic knowledge of life sciences and journalism practices
Required Experience
Education:
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in communications, science journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree
Experience:
  • Required: One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in science communications, public relations, science journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, and radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, or web/digital media scientific content. Demonstrated experience creating content for print and online publication including scientific writing.
  • Preferred: Five years of experience in journalism and STEM field experience. Two years of experience in scientific writing. Experience in proposal writing, editing, and producing content accessible to a wide variety of audiences.

Proficient in advanced techniques with relevant software: MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and other publishing and multi-media content platforms in addition to experience working within shared work environments.
