We have a new opportunity to support a cutting edge research laboratory at Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute while carrying out research projects. Dr. David Pellman's group is studying the mechanism of chromosome segregation, the cell biology of the nucleus and mutational processes that drive rapid evolution of genomes. About the Research Specialist role:

The selected candidate will work collaboratively with Dr. Pellman and laboratory members to perform molecular genetics and live-cell imaging experiments, including a method developed in the Pellman lab to combine long-term live-cell imaging with semi-robotic cell picking and single cell genome sequencing.

What you'll do:

* Pursue independent research projects.

* Train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in light microscopy and molecular genetic methods.

* Evaluate new techniques and technology as requested.

* Research the scientific literature for methods optimization and for the conceptual background of projects.

* Operate and help maintain sophisticated microscopes.

* Provide general research project support to other team members.

What you bring:

* Ph.D. in biomedical sciences with experience in microscopy and image analysis is required.

* Strong computer skills, including demonstrated proficiency in image analysis software such as ImageJ and basic AI methods.

* Excellent communication skills and the ability to use good judgment in working independently.

* Sense of self-motivation, flexibility, integrity, and ability to work in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

* Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical skills, and high attention to detail.

* Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.

Compensation Range:

Research Specialist I - $67,540 (minimum) - $84,400 (midpoint) - $109,780 (maximum)

Research Specialist II - $78,870 (minimum) - $98,500 (midpoint) - $128,040 (maximum)

Pay Type: Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.
