About the Role

The Payroll Manager is responsible for managing the timely and accurate processing of a complex multi-state payroll, which spans multiple corporate entities and Collective Bargaining Agreements.

This Payroll Manager facilitates process compliance, standardization, continuous improvements, and best practices. The Payroll Manager continuously monitors various company, union, and regulatory requirements, and drives both payroll-related business and system changes to meet those requirements. The Payroll Manager is responsible for ensuring that the payroll department provides an effective response time with the appropriate sense of urgency and prioritization for any payroll related issues or problems and engages both internal and external resources to assist if needed in providing timely resolution.

What you’ll do:

• Manage the overall preparation of payroll primarily for either offshore or shoreside employees. Establish, implement, and manage processes and policies to ensure accurate and timely payment of payroll to all employees and appropriate reporting to internal and external entities.
• Ensure payroll systems are operating precisely and work closely with both internal and external resources to resolve any issues and discrepancies.
• Keep abreast of tax related regulations and changes, and oversee the timely preparation, remittance, and reconciliation of taxes for the appropriate Federal, State or Local agencies as required by regulation.
• Drive the payroll life cycle, including creating and streamlining payroll processes to improve productivity and efficiency. Ensure that all processes are clearly and accurately aligned with payroll activities. Work with corporate tax, accounting, human resources, business leaders and business unit staff to address matters relating to payroll services.
• Manage payroll related accounting duties including, but not limited to, ensuring timely and accurate completion of general ledger accounts reconciliations and monthly cash statements. Ensure all payroll costs including accruals are recorded accurately and timely by the payroll team.
• Manage governmental, union, SOX, and other audits. Provide well-organized and precise documentation and resolve audit questions and concerns. Identify and implement recommendations to improve or enhance the payroll process.
• Possess understanding of multi-state payroll regulations to ensure payroll compliance. Understand law regarding wage attachments and payroll deductions, direct deposit, and employee consent.
• Ensure the alignment of payroll calculations, processes, and best practices for multiple Collective Bargaining Agreements.
• Directly supervises the payroll team in area of work (shoreside or offshore), but also provides guidance and mentorship for all payroll team members

You have these skills:

• Advanced Excel skills along with other computer software.
• Analysis and auditing experience with detail-oriented work environment.
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Hire, coach, mentor, and lead the payroll team.
• Ability to build strong working relationships with both internal and external business partners.

And these qualifications:

• A four (4) year bachelor’s degree in accounting or other finance area, plus five (5) years of related experience. May substitute education requirement with strong qualitative experience.
• Knowledge of required reporting to meet regulatory requirements for taxes, labor, and census worker’s compensation, etc.

Extra credit if you have:

• Transportation or Logistics industry and previous Matson experience preferred.
