With the exception of our tech team, all employees work in our offices at Brookfield Place in the Financial District of New York City.

Position and Responsibilities Overview:

Masterworks has become a significant player in the market, with a collection of over 120 paintings valued at nearly $500m. We are looking for an experienced Appraiser, with a specialization in blue-chip Modern and Contemporary Art to join our Team.

You will report to the Head of Appraisals and be responsible for:

• Providing highly credible opinions on value for blue-chip Post War and Contemporary paintings by artists like Andy Warhol, Joan Mitchell and Mark Bradford.
• Assessing Fair Market Value for paintings priced in excess of $1 million and regularly contributing to pricing sessions.
• Vetting artworks for acquisition including analysis of the artist’s historical market performance, condition, provenance and appropriate authentication protocols for the artist.
• Performing and supervising research on artworks in the Masterworks portfolio and prospective acquisitions.
• Writing and editing essays on artworks acquired by Masterworks.
• Maintaining overviews of an artist’s practice and market and related research materials.
• Providing USPAP compliant Fair Market Value Appraisal Reports for works in the collection on an ongoing basis and actively contributing to the improvement of internal processes.
• Managing pricing data and information, in compliance with USPAP standards, for the 200 artworks owned by the company.
• Inspection of artworks in person and on site, as necessary.

Requirements or Skill Sets:

• 8 years of experience in the art market, with extensive knowledge of the secondary art market for Post War and Contemporary Art
• Experience at a major auction house, appraisal firm or advisory group is required
• Working knowledge of Excel and/or Google Sheets, including formulas, is a must
• Familiarity with database management and/or Airtable is a plus
• Highly analytical, data driven, discrete and highly organized
• Fast learner with excellent verbal and written communication skills
• USPAP Certification required
