The Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Urgent Care (Lynn)

General Overview

We are seeking full-time LPNs to work 3, 12.5-hour shifts per week (with overtime, on-call, weekends, and holidays as needed).

Our LPNs will partner with our clinical and non-clinical staff to test out new ways of delivering exceptional care to our patients. This role is a unique opportunity to work on-site with the clinical team to deliver high-quality patient care. The LPN is an integral part of our diverse team, embracing our culture of well-being and kindness, and contributing to constant improvement. This role will be part of a team that will frequently prototype new ideas, including digital tools, care team roles, and workflows, that may be used in designing for the future of ambulatory care across MGBIC. What You’ll Work On

The LPN will be primarily accountable for:

  • Working closely and collegially with physicians, APPs and other clinical and administrative staff to enhance the delivery of patient care services along the continuum of care
  • Ensuring that patients receive timely, high quality and efficient health care and support services
  • Promoting patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs

Clinical Patient Care Responsibilities Include:

  • Greets and assists patients and other guests in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner. Registers patients arriving in the EMR following existing protocols.
  • Responsible for patient triage during the day for patients seeking care, gathers information about relevant clinical signs and symptoms and makes and executes a timely and accurate triage decision regarding the patient’s care.
  • Rooms patients, including vital signs, review of symptoms and chief complaint in an electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Manages emergency situations as indicated, directing clinical team and providing hand off to EMS in collaboration with provider.
  • Effectively responds to and communicates urgent or time sensitive information to the appropriate providers for the visit.
  • Maintains records of vital statistics and other pertinent data of patients. Receives patient lab results and other data, enters and organizes this data into the patient medical records according to MGB Urgent Care protocols.
  • Proficient in full range of nursing skills, including draw blood and collect urine samples, reconstitute medications, administer oral medications, provide injections and immunizations, administration of IV’s, provide oxygen and nebulizer treatments, assist providers with medical procedures, perform minor procedures, collect specimens, perform rapid laboratory tests, perform EKGs, process and prepare lab samples for outside lab processing, and splinting and fitting patients for durable medical equipment.
  • Communicates and interprets providers clinical information and instructions to patients; with specific direction from the provider including but not limited to instructing patients regarding medication, use of home testing or other equipment's or medical supplies, communicating test results, counsels’ patients on home or after care advice and health maintenance related issues.
  • Acts as a liaison and advocate for patients with external agencies and institutions to ensure that all necessary care is received. Ensures that referrals are made in an appropriate and timely fashion and that appropriate documentation is provided
  • Assists with new medication prescriptions as directed by the providers.
  • Informs patients of test results and/or providers recommendations in person, phone or via patient gateway.
  • Performs routine lab maintenance and logs.
  • Cleans and stages exam and procedure suites in between patient occupancy.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as composing and responding to emails, answering, and making phone calls, etc.
  • Shares responsibility for clinical daily activities including check list for opening and closing of center.
  • Orders, receives, stocks, and organizes the handling of medications as indicated.
  • Acts as a resource and/or trains new or less experienced Nurses, Medical Assistants and/or support staff as indicated
  • Attends meetings and continuing educations opportunities as directed.
  • Performs other tasks as requested by the Practice Supervisor/Manager

Servicing as a communication liaison between the care team and patient

Providing patient education/coaching and gives handoff to Care Manager if appropriate

  • Accepting and delegating responsibilities in a positive manner
  • Engaging in constructive problem solving with others in the practice as problems arise

We do our best to keep all employees at their assigned centers; however, for on-call shifts, employees must be able to commute to any of our locations, including Boston Common, Brookline, Cambridge, Lynn, Natick, Newton, Westwood, and Woburn. You may also be asked to report to any of these centers during orientation (for training/precepting purposes) or during times of staffing shortages or other extenuating circumstances (for cross-coverage purposes).

Qualifications/About You

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of a Nursing degree program required
  • Actively licensed as Practical Nurse in the state of Massachusetts required
  • BLS/CPR certification required
  • Required a minimum of 1 year of triage experience in a Medical Office or Hospital.
  • Previous experience in an urgent care or ER preferred

  • Ability to accurately read and write medical terminology.
  • Experience with labs, history and vitals, blood draws and IVs necessary.
  • IV insertion and infusion competency
  • Knowledge of minor surgical procedures and equipment.
  • An outstanding bedside manner with both pediatric and adult patients.
  • A positive and energetic attitude which inspires other team members.
  • Demonstrated ability and strong commitment to exceptional patient care and customer service principles.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, balance multiple tasks, set priorities, and solve problems independently.
  • Technology proficiency is critical, including previous EMR experience and knowledge of Microsoft software products such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Working Conditions

  • Reliable, independent transportation is required for travel to various Urgent Care locations
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Required to move from one location to another within and outside of the building; push, pull and reach; bend; stand for long periods of time; and sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to speak and write English fluently.
  • Ability to work 12.5-hour shifts, overtime, on-call, weekends, and holidays as needed.
