Job Title: Sanitation Manager

Department: Sanitation

Reports To: Plant Manager

Substitute: Plant Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary: As a member of the Martin’s Family,  the Sanitation Manager is responsible for maintaining the food safe quality of our product by following standard operating procedures to exceed industry and federal cleaning and sanitizing requirements. This individual supervises leads the Sanitation department by coaching and developing the Sanitation Supervisors who oversee the Sanitation and Housekeeping teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge all mandated regulations such as FDA and USDA Rules and Regulations, Good Manufacturing Practices, Bioterrorism Act, HACCP,U.S. Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, Food Defense Program, Allergen, Chemical Program, Recall and Return Program, Hold and Release Program, AIM Program, Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures.
  • Inspects products and equipment for conformity to federal and state sanitation laws and plant standards.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly plant walkthroughs and identifies areas for improvement.
  • Works with Sanitation Supervisors to evaluate and maintain accuracy and completion of all information in the master cleaning schedule.
  • Manages staff through hiring, handling employee relations situations, evaluating performance, and coaching.
  • Interacts with chemical suppliers and participates in 3rd party supplier visits.
  • Compiles and analyzes required reports regarding regular inspections, sanitation violations, and steps taken to resolve deficiencies.
  • Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
  • Develops and helps develop new SOP’s.
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Confers with other Bakery Management to appropriately coordinate activities/schedules.
  • Performs activities of workers supervised when needed.
  • Adheres to and enforces to safety, food safety, quality, and Good Manufacturing Practices regulations.
  • Coordinates with Food Safety Manager to resolve any food safety concerns in the cleaning process.
  • Actively participates in SQF Audits and other regulatory inspections.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages subordinate supervisors with supervisory responsibility to employees engaged in food processing. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the production business units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field;
  • Five plus years’ managerial experience in manufacturing industry.
  • Related food environment experience.
  • SQF practitioner experience desired.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of all mandated regulations 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.Ability to write simple correspondence.Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint

Physical Demands :

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to walk. The employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
