Martin County Board of County Commissioners is Hiring a Mechanic Near Stuart, FL

This is skilled work at the journeyman mechanical level in the maintenance and major repair of a wide variety of automotive and heavy construction equipment. Works under the direction of the Vehicle Services Administrator.

In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.

Performs repair and maintenance on a wide variety of county-owned automotive and heavy equipment.
 
Diagnoses defects and failures of automotive and heavy equipment using standard modern testing equipment.
 
Performs complete major overhaul and repairs on automobiles and on light and heavy trucks, including motors, brakes, air conditioning systems, ignition systems, transmissions, differentials and rear axle assembles.
 
Diagnoses problems using modern testing equipment.
 
Diagnose, repair and maintain hydraulic systems including valves, pumps and cylinders.
 
Responds to emergency road calls involving disabled county equipment.
 
Ability to weld.
 
Accurate completion of work orders and parts used.
Stay current with all standard practices and equipment of the mechanic trade, principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines, mechanical repair and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
 
Recognize and correct unsafe conditions.
 
Cleans and maintains equipment, tools and supplies in the shop and the service vehicles.
 
Performs any duties within the scope of capabilities as assigned by the supervisor.
 
Responds to emergencies and ability to be on call 24/7 as assigned by supervisor.
Performs work related to this job description as required.

Knowledge of the practices and required equipment of the trade.
 
Knowledge of the principles and operation of diesel and gasoline engines.
 
Knowledge of the principals and operations of hydraulic systems.
 
Knowledge of automotive air conditioning systems.
 
Knowledge of automotive computer-controlled circuits and electrical devices.
 
Ability to read and understand complex electrical diagrams and circuits.
 
Ability to use on line diagnostic information to successfully complete assigned tasks.
 
Ability to complete complex tasks with minimum supervision and direction.
 
Ability to operate heavy equipment, pumps, generators and forklifts as required.
 Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and completion of an approved apprenticeship program and two (2) years' experience in the vehicle maintenance mechanical field as an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic with experience performing repair to heavy diesel equipment.
 
Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class B preferred
Must possess a forklift certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred.

The work is involved in areas which requires special safety precautions. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or equipment. May work at heights, under trailers, around odors and fumes, exposure to hazardous chemicals, noise and light conditions. Works with others or independently.

Occasional work around vibrations, work in cramped quarters, work from high places, exposure to burns and electrical hazards. 

Very frequent interactions with others. 

Constantly inside and outside, working with adequate lighting and ventilation, exposed to mechanical hazards, moving objects/machinery.
