Fincantieri Marinette Marine, a Fincantieri Marine Group Company, is a progressive shipyard specializing in building ships for the United States Navy. We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer at our Washington, DC location.

Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) is establishing a Naval Design team as part of the continuing development of our engineering department. The focus of this group, which will be primarily located in our Washington DC office, will be ship concept design, new program development, feasibility studies, class design services, technical specifications, proposal development, and research and development. This team will supplement our current engineering staff located in Marinette, Wisconsin, and work closely with our existing program offices, business development team and estimating group.

Split between ship design and ship's payload, FMM anticipates this new team to be at the forefront of our technical and design efforts. Its proximity to our customers and leading naval technical leaders will help us to anticipate market needs and provide accelerated support. Additionally, it will take the lead in building and maintaining our relationships with universities, research laboratories, and industry partners.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanical Engineer will be an integral part of the ship design team and report to the Ship Design Technical Lead. This position plays a vital role in the Naval Design group and will contribute to continued success in early stage design at FMM. Tasking will include items such as:

• Participate in feasibility studies, including propulsion system architecture definitions and integration, mechanical systems conceptual development, high level performance characteristics, all to satisfy customer requirements
• Develop engine room and auxiliary machinery room layouts, including preliminary shaft line arrangements, including maintenance and production considerations
• Work on definition of pre-contractual technical specifications, supporting cost estimation team
• Support proposal development for early stage ship designs and research and development

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties to include, but not limited to

• As part of the Naval Design team, will have responsibility to complete marine/mechanical engineering tasks to support all work/projects assigned to the team
• Work collaboratively in the Naval Systems group as well as the with core engineering teams at FMM, ACE, FBS
• Proposal development for ship designs, R&D, etc., in support of business development efforts and customer requests
• Maintain awareness of the latest advancements in marine/mechanical engineering and science associated with ship design and production, as well as related fields
• Requires travel to support the shipyard teams, research partners, and universities
• Build relationships and coordinate with research partners, including universities and labs

EDUCATION

• Master's Degree in Engineering, preferably Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, and 5 years of experience in the maritime industry

SKILLS

• Must be self-motivated and capable of working individually, as part of a technical team, and as a project lead of a small team
• Must have a working knowledge of standard shipbuilding rules and regulations, as well as the associated regulatory agencies and the review & approval process.
• Must have current computer skills relevant to the field of competence
• Must have ability to work within schedule and budget constraints
• Ability to approach challenging problems with creative solutions
• Must have the ability to maintain a professional demeanor
• Must have effective written and verbal communication skills
• Must have ability to maintain confidentiality
• Experience with concept and functional ship design desirable, as is experience in a research and development environment
