M.C. Dean, Inc. is Hiring an Electrical Design Engineer 5 - Harrisburg, PA Near Harrisburg, PA

Education/Certification

1. A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology

2. Minimum of 10 years' experience working with Industrial Electrical, Instrumentation, & Control Systems including at least 5 years direct involvement in the design and fabrication of Industrial Control Panels.

3. Technical School or Professional Certification(s) preferred (ISA, NFPA, ATMAE, PM, CompTIA, Microsoft, Etc.)

4. It is expected that the Electrical Design Engineer would obtain a VA Journeyman Electrician Tradesman License within 24 months of hire and a VA Master Electrician Tradesman License within 48 Months of hire.

Experience

1. Industrial electrical hands-on experience Designing, Programming, Manufacturing, Installing, Commissioning, and Troubleshooting of 24 VDC thru 600V 3-phase AC electrical, instrumentation, and motor control systems.

2. Experience selecting and sizing components found in industrial control systems including: Enclosures, Motor Control Centers, Combination Starters, Operator Controls, Machine Safety Circuits & Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers, Remote ID Systems, HMI Panels, Drives, Servo Systems, Sensors, Instrumentation, Network Interfaces, Network Cabling, Computer and Graphic Display Systems, SCADA Systems, Electrical Test & Calibration Equipment, Power Systems, Telemetry, and Safety Systems. Field experience installing, troubleshooting, and/or maintaining this equipment is a plus.

3. Experience designing Electrical Distribution Systems and Electrical Wiring up to 600V, including selection and sizing of control equipment and overcurrent protection for motor and control loads.

4. Experience producing load calculations for motors and motor control systems.

5. Experience selecting coordinated overcurrent protection for motor loads- 6.

Experience designing and working with communications networks and low voltage wiring systems.

7. Ability to produce electrical distribution and control wiring diagrams created to North American & European standards.

8. Ability to produce detailed 2-dimensional control panel elevation drawings to scale.

9. Ability to quickly read and interpret technical documentation related to electrical components and systems.

10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, Bluebeam, Adobe, AutoCAD, and Visio.

11. Working knowledge of various PLC hardware platforms including Siemens, Allen Bradley, Modicon, Automation Direct, General Electric, Omron, Opto22, Control Microsystems, AVG, Koyo, etc.

12. Skilled at using and interpreting NFPA70, NFPA70E, NFPA79, UL508, and other applicable codes & standards.

13. Hands on experience in all phases of Industrial Control Panel design and fabrication.

Job Tasks

1. Assist estimators and project engineers in developing bills of materials and labor cost projections for various project proposals.

2. Assist the lead project engineer in documenting conditions of both existing and new systems and assist in determining customer requirements for same.

3. Work with lead project engineer to develop single-line diagrams for line voltage and low voltage power distribution and block diagrams for communication network wiring and hard-wired control interface concepts.

4. Work with project software engineers to develop I/O lists for all PLC's and other programmable devices.

5. Develop detailed load studies for line voltage and low voltage power distribution networks including analysis of coordinated overcurrent protection where required.

6. Create detailed design packages to M. C. Dean and client standards for content and referencing. Design deliverables in the package include all drawings, tables, and schedules needed for fabrication, installation, and maintenance of the system. Packages generally include but are not limited to:

  • Schematic Drawings in standard NEMA or IC formats detailing all circuits, devices, and wiring connections with cross references between devices and wiring determined by the accepted naming convention and logical coordinate system.
  • Layout drawings for all panels showing location of all devices, terminal rails, wire duct, bus bar, power conductor routing labeling, and other important physical details of the assembly. Layout drawings are cross referenced by device tag to the schematic drawings and bill of materials.
  • One-line diagrams for line voltage and low voltage power distribution networks and communication networks, cross-referenced as above.
  • Engineered Bill of Materials, cross-referenced as above.
  • Cable schedule, including cable types, gauges, conductor grouping and identification, circuit assignments, cable lengths, terminations, and other variables necessary to the project at hand. Cable schedules are cross referenced to the schematic drawings one-line diagrams, and Bill of Materials as noted above.
  • Detailed terminal rail assembly documents to show placement of parts and identify labeling.
  • Printer ready lists of wire, cable, device, and terminal labels extracted from the drawings.

7. Incorporate devices and circuits for personnel safety into the design to satisfy the identified risk level of the system.

Working knowledge of machine safety standards and practices is required.

8. Create designs that resolve questions and details related to device and panel mounting, spacing, fastening, cable support, wire and cable routing, wire terminations, labeling, and grounding to enhance the efficiency of panel fabrication and installation activities.

9. Prepare and transmit formal design submittals where required for approval purposes.

10. Maintain archived copies of the design documents through the design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning phases of the work in M. C. Dean network.

11. Prepare As-Built design documentation at the completion of the project and distribute to the project stakeholders.

12. Participate in development of purchasing plans and assist in expediting materials required for construction of panels in accordance with production schedule and client needs.

13. Stage the submittal of purchase requisitions to the purchasing department according to the purchasing plan and project schedule to ensure material is available for fabrication when needed. Track delivery of material orders to identify delivery problems early in the process.

14. Assist shop in determining commodity material requirements prior to panel construction.

15. Interface with fabrication and installation teams during the design phase to ensure design can be manufactured and installed efficiently.

16. Work with engineering and management to develop standards for drawing detail, design documentation, and panel fabrication.

17. Assist in developing standards for shop work procedures, quality, and compliance with customer specifications.

18. Identify and suggest process improvements and cost saving measures for the design and manufacturing teams.

19. Document project issues/conditions and works with design engineer to mitigate/resolve any issues.

20. Work with field personnel and/or engineering team to identify any potential installation issues.

21. Inspect and review panels during and after construction to monitor compliance with codes, standards, and other regulations.

22. Consult with senior management, supervisory personnel, owners, contractors, design professionals, and shop staff to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, and constructability problems.

23. Participate in FAT testing of completed panels to ensure panels are built according to the design, free of defects, and function as desired.

24. Prepare marked-up demolition and installation drawing sets for the installation phase where components and panels need to be integrated within an existing installation.

25. Supervise the installation of panels and system components and serve as technical advisor where installation is part of the contract package. Ensure that red-line drawings are maintained and updated during the installation process.

26. Lead final inspection and power-up testing of system components to ensure system is installed according to the design and ready for functional testing.

27. Assist programmers and project engineers in commissioning and functional testing to assist with modifications or corrections that may be necessary.
