Description

Lynker is seeking a Software Engineer for the Ocean Prediction Center, who will directly support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in providing technical and science support for the mission to enhance the safety of life and property at sea and economic enhancement.  The Software Engineer selected will be responsible for developing operational processes, procedures, and tools with the NWS Ocean Prediction Center to optimize the use of a gridded data production tool used by NOAA marine forecasters to produce ocean weather warnings and forecasts of winds, waves, and other marine weather oceanographic phenomena.  Such tools will be developed to gain efficiency, improve accuracy, and increase consistency in gridded and graphical warning and forecast products used by professional mariners, the US Coast Guard, the Navy, fishermen, and recreational boaters. 

Requirements

Duties of the Software Engineer will include the following: 

• Develop and maintain procedures and applications to support and enhance digital and graphical forecast production for meteorological and oceanographic fields such as winds and waves for large ocean areas
• Assess, interpret and collaborate on meteorological or oceanographic data and forecast model output
• Collaborate on technical specifications and implementations with local team members and partner offices with marine weather forecasting responsibilities 
• Perform meteorological or oceanographic analysis and data integration, collaborate on emerging operational problems, identify new data sets, and develop techniques to provide routine forecast guidance and analyses. 
• Assist in the development and maintenance of pre-processing of appropriate fields and associated data flows 
• Provide technical communication and collaboration with other teams where appropriate 
• Take personal ownership of problems and drive them to solutions 

The Ideal Software Engineer will have the following:

• The Software Engineer selected MUST HAVE a B.S. or B.A. or M.S. or M.A. from an accredited institution in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or other Geophysical Sciences, Computer Sciences, or Mathematics 
• The Software Engineer selected MUST HAVE 1 years or equivalent experience writing applications in support of a scientific goal
• Proficiency with Linux and Linux scripting 
• Working knowledge of Python and familiarity with GIS applications and standards 
• Proficiency with best practices of debugging and testing programs and applications 
• Ability to apply graphics and statistical analysis packages to analyze and present scientific information. 
• Skilled at interpreting technical documents and communicating scientific information effectively
