Lincoln County is Hiring a Diesel Mechanic Near Canton, SD

Are you ASE certified? Have you worked on all kinds of equipment? Are you looking for a role with good benefits and a consistent schedule? Lincoln County Highway Shop is hiring a Diesel Mechanic to join their team. This position will work primarily on their own, working with our welder as needed, and tracking vehicle maintenance with oversight from the Assistant Highway Superintendent. Responsibilities include performing in all phases of mechanical maintenance and repair on light, medium, and heavy or complex equipment, fabricating and welding materials as needed, and maintaining records. This position is located at the Lincoln County Highway Shop in Canton, SD. 

 Examples of Duties Include:

  • Perform skilled scheduled and unscheduled repairs, inspections, tune-ups, and overhauls. Adjust, repair, and/or replacing hydraulics, fuel systems, brakes, drive trains and transmissions, cooling and heating systems, body and chassis, steering systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, conveyors, wheels, tires, tracks, suspension systems, computer and sensor systems, and other related parts on automotive, heavy gasoline, and diesel equipment including automobiles, trucks, tractors, rollers, sweepers, snow blowers, loaders, motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, seeders, mowers, and other light and heavy construction equipment.
  • Scheduling all light, medium, and heavy equipment repair work.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and test automotive, truck, and light and heavy mobile and stationary equipment to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs. Estimate time and labor hours necessary to complete repairs.
  • Perform parts, materials, and other purchasing; inventory parts, materials, and fuel; may assist in the development of specifications for new vehicles and maintenance equipment.
  • Perform data collection for budget requests; maintain detailed computerized maintenance records, monthly fuel reports, and monthly tank inspection reports.
  • Locate and purchase parts and materials and maintain records. Coordinate with vendors for quotes, warranties, and recalls.
  • Work with other highway employees to help design, weld, adapt, fabricate, and rebuild specialized equipment and tools. Modify and redesign existing equipment. Set up and program computerized systems in and on vehicle and equipment. Clean and maintain tools.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance including oil changes, chassis lubes, fluid checks, lighting systems, etc. on trucks, tractors, automobiles, and other county highway equipment.
  • Perform snow and ice control and removal procedures including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, and hauling snow from all county properties.
  • May be required to perform duties of a similar, or lower, level of responsibility on the highway road, bridge, or sign team to meet demands for operational efficiency.
  • Create, edit, and maintain work orders within fleet management system.

 Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED plus four years of work experience as a journeyman mechanic or in a similar work environment. Completion of an automotive/diesel trade school. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Certifications in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) on medium/heavy-duty trucks. Possession of valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement within 120 days of hire. Must maintain safe driving record. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process.

 Preferred Qualifications:

Associates degree in related field with eight years of progressively responsible and relevant work experience. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certification. ASE Automobile and Light Truck Certification. Familiarity with fleet management software. Experience with reading blueprints, electrical schematics, all position welding, metallurgy, and fabrication. Knowledge of hydraulic functions.
