Position: Service Engineer

Reports to: Senior Customer Service Manager

Location: Loveland

Division: Technical/Customer Support

Compensation: $65,000 to $90,000 (depends on experience)

Position Summary

The Service Engineer is responsible for coordinating technical support and technical escalation for clients as well as repair centers. They identify root causes, troubleshoot fixes, and document field failures to improve both service and Lightning eMotors (LeM) product lines. This position develops processes for capturing technical information and participates in design review with engineering to provide input on the serviceability of designs. They provide guidance on the technical training process as well. While this position may not be responsible for the technical writing required for the training material, it is expected that this position will be responsible for the included content and training materials developed as well as delivering that training to our partner service and repair centers.

Travel is expected for this role 50% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and escalation, as well as troubleshooting for clients and repair centers, including both remote and on-site support when necessary
  • Mentor and coach technicians in the region to improve skills and capabilities
  • Service as a technical support resource, providing diagnostic support on complex and hard to diagnose warranty and non-warranty repair events
  • Coordinate complex repair plans and field improvements for impacted fleets, including repair tracking, status, and communication. Develop necessary tools for documentation tracking
  • Investigate product issues at customer or dealer locations
  • Document the results of diagnostic and repair actions
  • Create and follow-through on action plans for all field repairs/field campaigns
  • Utilize 7-step technical problem-solving process and apply process as LeM service standard
  • Serve as Technical Liaison between customer/repair center and engineering; documenting root cause and developing processes to capture field failures and associated technical information
  • Participate in engineering design reviews and provide input on serviceability
  • Provide guidance and content for technical training process; deliver technical training to service and/or repair centers
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Flexibility: You should be willing to learn new technologies; and both obtain and maintain technical certifications as needed. Reliability is key as the service team is expected to work occasional evenings, weekend, after-hours, and on-call for scheduled and unscheduled events.
  • Initiative: Work independently and identify more effective methods of work operation.
  • Safety focused: You should keep safety in the forefront of your mind, demonstrating safe work practices and complying with safety procedures.

What we require: (education, experience, certifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; or equivalent experience in a directly related role
  • 2 years of experience as a Controls, Design, Test Engineer, or in a directly role
  • Demonstrated experience writing control logic in Simulink, LabVIEW, Raptor, and/or Motohaw
  • Demonstrated experience with CAN bus diagnostics and data logging with CANalyzer, PCAN, and/or Kvaser
  • Experience with fleet or automotive maintenance, service, and repair
  • Experience writing technical documentation

What we prefer: (education, experience, certifications)

  • ABET certified degree program
  • 3 years of experience as a Controls, Design, Test Engineer, or in a similar role
  • Automotive industry experience
  • Troubleshooting experience in the field 
  • Experience with high-voltage DC systems—PHEV, EV, or FCEV applications are highly preferred
  • Understanding of basic EV system architecture and components
  • Knowledge and practical application of CAD systems
  • Experience turning customer expectations into engineering requirements

Required Travel: 50%
