Layer is Hiring a Full Stack Engineer Near Brisbane, CA

Summary

  • Build the foundations of a platform serving exciting customers globally, including companies at the frontier of Web3, gaming and entertainment.
  • Funded startup backed by some of Australia’s most recognised venture investors.
  • Shape the culture you’ve always wanted; supported by a team with experience spanning leading startups, household-name brands and gaming.

Full Stack Engineer

Help define and build the future for your favourite characters, stories and products in video games and the metaverse. You’ll work on building the Layer marketplace and the tools to make accessing licensed IP easy for game creators globally.

About Layer

Layer is on a mission to connect the creator economy with the gaming economy. Coming out of the Winter ‘21 Startmate cohort and now backed by some of Australia’s top, globally-focused venture funds we’re on a journey to help all the world's creators work with all the world’s games.

Our team has worked with top technical talent at leading companies including Go1, and Propeller Aero. We know the feeling that great engineering brings to a company and that it starts with the people and nurturing the culture.

About you

You’ll be comfortable working in a greenfield environment and making lots of decisions. We’re after a problem solver who loves to learn — we're not experts in everything and we don't expect you to be either.

Some of the fundamentals that will be required to excel in this role are:

  • Relevant software engineering experience that touches back and front-end development.
  • Strong OO design knowledge and practical experience applying design patterns and development practices.
  • Strong, up to date knowledge and experience of a modern software languages and frameworks (e.g. .NET Core, React, etc).
  • The ability to write clean, scalable, testable and maintainable code.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining modern cloud architecture.
  • Ability to audit and provide constructive feedback on technical designs, code, project plans, and project execution.

You’ll enjoy having end-to-end life-cycle ownership over what you’re building, from development right through to production and beyond. Your opinion on architectural, stack and design decisions will be highly valued and crucial to ensuring we can deliver on the vision for Layer.

We want you to be a big part of ensuring that fun, curiosity and execution are the foundation of how we do engineering at Layer. You’ll also be comfortable supporting and providing direction to a growing engineering team.

We don't care if you went to school, we just care about what you can do and how you do it. We're makers and tinkerers, so as long as you love to build awesome stuff you'll fit right in.

Bonus points for specific experience or interest in one or more of the following:

  • The games industry.
  • Building two sided marketplaces.
  • Web3/Metaverse.

About the job

You’ll work closely with our founders, engineers, designers and team of gaming and licensing veterans to help shape and build the next generation of our marketplace product and licensing tools. You'd spend your time developing and improving on things including:

  • Building the essential front and backend component of a marketplace including listings/discovery functionality, payments and user management.
  • Building tools that make previously complicated and bespoke business processes involved in bringing third party content into games approachable and easy for creators and content owners.

...as well as contributing directly to the product strategy and creative vision of Layer.

You’ll spend lots of time brainstorming on hard problems, prototyping different ideas and responding to what we learn from customers. You won’t be churning through tickets in a backlog — you'll be helping to architect entirely new features and figuring out exactly how to build them.

We're still small which means that even though we each have our areas of expertise, we all wear many hats. You’ll know when it’s possible to move fast vs when it’s important to sweat the small stuff. We're looking for an engineer, but you'd also help out with things like:

  • Getting to know users and their requirements and helping other developers understand and implement them.
  • Fixing bugs and troubleshooting problems for users.
  • Writing and improving our processes and documentation.
  • Providing technical direction and guiding us on technical decisions.

Pay and benefits

This role is full time. We have an office in Brisbane and generally spend most days of the week there because it speeds up communication and it’s more fun. We’d ask that you plan to overlap with us at least 3 days per week. You choose the days. If you think you’re the right person but are not in Brisbane, we’d still love to hear from you. We’re global from day one with users across the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific and expect our team to reflect that more as we grow. At the end of the day all that matters to us is that we're making progress on what we're building together.

The salary for this position is based on experience and will reflect the market. Ownership is important to us and you’ll receive equity as part of an Employee Share Options Plan.

We are looking for someone to start ASAP but can be flexible for the right person. Can't wait to hear from you!
