Pay Range

$103,290.00 - $139,128.00 Annually for the SES.1 level
$123,960.00 - $166,992.00 Annually for the SES.2 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have openings for an Analytical Chemist to support the Nuclear Materials Test Program. You will perform sample preparation and analysis on various materials, including plutonium and other radioactive materials, using spectrometers, pH meters, coulometers, evolved gas analyzers, inductively coupled emission spectrometers, and inductively coupled mass spectrometers.

This position is in the Chemistry of Nuclear Materials group within the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level, depending on qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will

  • Apply wet chemistry lab techniques including the use of pipettes, pH meters, and laboratory balances to solid and liquid samples.
  • Perform or oversee equipment installation, upgrade, maintenance, and/or repair.
  • Perform routine fissile materials sample handling and maintain certification as a fissile materials handler (LLNL will provide training for certification).
  • Perform hands-on work in gloveboxes and other contamination enclosures.
  • Prepare informal written analyses, verbal briefings, and other presentations that capture and communicate team results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Perform moderately complex to complex fissile materials sample preparation and analysis, including by ICP-ES and ICP-MS.
  • Independently perform tests, process data, and report results according to documented operating procedures.
  • Independently prepare technical reports.
  • Mentor and train colleagues.
  • Collaborate with other scientists in and across multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • BS/BA in Chemistry, Forensics, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • General knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Fundamental knowledge and practical experience (sample preparation, hazardous materials handling, etc.).
  • Ability to become a Fissile Material Handler.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research environment.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • Broad experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team research environment supporting fellow scientists, engineers, and technologists as demonstrated by co-authored reports/publications.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports, explain technical information, and advise management.

Qualifications We Desire

  • MS in Chemistry, Forensics, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated environment and complying with safety regulations.
  • Experience installing, calibrating, and/or maintaining analytical equipment.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
