Job Description Summary

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Students, the University Chaplain provides leadership in fostering the spiritual life of the WFU community. Centering a multifaith, pluralistic approach to cultural and spiritual development, the Chaplain leads an office focused on meeting the needs of a spiritually diverse campus. The Chaplain carries out this mission by developing partnerships with academic departments, offices, groups, and organizations across campus. The Chaplain facilitates and supports the development of programs that address important religious and spiritual questions of the day. The Office of the Chaplain inspires commitment to the university motto Pro Humanitate by helping students, faculty, and staff of all faith traditions pursue meaning and purpose through spiritual reflection and free inquiry.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Support the cultural, religious, and spiritual life of the Wake Forest community
  • In deep partnership with colleagues, advance interfaith and pluralistic programmatic initiatives on campus
  • Provide pastoral consultation to individuals and the Wake Forest community in times of crisis, often in partnership with both University and community health care resources
  • Champion the spiritual and cultural needs of faith communities at Wake Forest by examining policies, procedures, and practices; and making recommendations for changes to ensure cross-cultural adjustment and retention
  • Provide a measure of coordination among the multifaith religious directors and their staff members, as well as religious advisors based on or outside the campus
  • Provide opportunities for the campus community to learn about a broad range of religious and spiritual traditions, including the relevant theological, pastoral, and cultural dimensions
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and coordinate full-time and part-time staff
  • Develop and manage budgets for the Office of the Chaplain
  • Facilitate community-wide seminal events of celebration and meaning-making, including the Annual Lovefest

Other Functions:

  • Assist with the orientation of religious directors and advisors new to the campus and/or to their role
  • Serve as the liaison between religious directors/advisors and their sponsoring agencies on the one hand and the university on the other, taking care to keep the directors/advisors and their agencies informed of university policies and procedures, aspirations and concerns
  • Help to resolve conflicts that may arise as well as assuring that religious activities are carried out in accordance with the expectations and standards upon which the religious directors have agreed
  • Provide the university with a calendar of religious occasions, and negotiating conflicts that arise between that calendar and academic events
  • Advise potential WFU students and families regarding campus religious life
  • Offer care, pastoral counseling, and spiritual guidance to the families of Wake Forest students
  • Provide religious leadership at public events, particularly the Baccalaureate Service, the Annual Lovefeast, and memorial services, taking care to involve representative religious directors and advisors as appropriate

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master's degree in Divinity or equivalent
  • A basic unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
  • A Religious Life Professional in good standing, with permission from a sending body authority, if required.
  • 8-10 years of experience in ministry and/or chaplaincy preferred
  • Solid understanding of faith development and the spiritual needs of emerging adults
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including program development, networking, and communication
  • Demonstrated capacity and character for effective ministry
  • Sensitivity, empathy, and a sense of humor are important personal traits
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills to effectively prioritize multiple tasks
  • Be a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Be willing and able to work a non-standard work week to include weekend and evening hours
  • Demonstrate an exceptional public presence (including, but not limited to, preaching)
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Demonstrate experience with interfaith capacity building
  • Ability to relate and build strong relationships with individuals from diverse communities and cultures at all levels within the organization
  • Participates in personal and professional growth opportunities, and continuing education activities

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Advanced theological degree (D.Min. or Ph.D)
  • Demonstrated experience in assessing program effectiveness
  • Proficiency in social media and other effective ways to communicate with emerging adults

Accountabilities:

  • Supervises Assistant and Associate Chaplains and administrative staff. May supervise campus ministers, contingent workers, volunteers, and other religious life professionals.
  • Externally-funded religious/spiritual groups will report to this position. These include denominational campus ministers, para-church representatives, and other religious life professionals.
  • Serves in an on-call rotation capacity for emergencies and crises. Responds to student problems and assists students, parents, faculty, and others in crisis situations.
