K-12 SCHOOL COUNSELOR (Part-Time)

ABOUT KHAN LAB SCHOOL 

In 2012, Sal Khan wrote The One World Schoolhouse, in which he outlines how modern education developed and how Khan Academy came to be. But, most importantly, the book outlines a vision for the future of both in-person and online education given the tools we have and the need for many more people to participate in the knowledge economy. In 2014, He founded Khan Lab School to test and refine these ideas in an actual school setting. 

Today, Khan Lab School has grown to be a K-12 independent school on two campuses serving 260 students in Silicon Valley. The K-6 program is located in Palo Alto. California. The middle and high school are located in Mountain View, California.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The School Counselor will assist students facing behavioral/social problems and learning differences, implement positive behavioral interventions, maintain ongoing relationships with community agencies and outside professionals, and provide professional development opportunities for teachers with a focus on social-emotional learning. S/he will oversee a school counseling program in collaboration with the School Directors and Director of Student Wellbeing.

The School Counselor must be prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health needs and to assist students and families seeking resources and strategies. When needed, the School Counselor acts as a liaison between community agencies, parents, students, and the KLS team. 

  • Implements school counseling program for grades K-12 on two campuses
  • Observes student learning upon the request of School Director in order to help evaluate the needs of the child in question and explore possible strategies and solutions
  • Provides short-term social, emotional, and behavioral support for individual students as needed
  • Serves as a resource to the KLS team for developmental, educational, and social-emotional concerns
  • Provides responsive services such as clinical counseling to individuals and/or small groups
  • Provides support for students and families to access school or community resources for additional assistance and information
  • Maintains detailed paperwork to ensure appropriate referrals and thorough documentation of student progress
  • Makes referrals to off-campus professionals and maintains working relationships with mental health agencies in the surrounding area 
  • Establishes and maintains a referral list of support service specialists such as therapists, speech and language pathologists, and developmental pediatricians
  • Keeps up-to-date on the latest practices and research in counseling and child development
  • Develops behavior management plans for students as needed, and tracks their progress

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or higher in school counseling and guidance and/or in social work, family/child therapy and psychology from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Related bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (i.e. education, psychology, counseling) 
  • 5 full years of experience in school counseling 
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to appropriately communicate with students, parents, and teachers in person and in writing
  • High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and exemplary interpersonal skills
  • Extremely organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to pinpoint problems and find creative solutions
  • High level of initiative with strong sense of urgency and flexibility
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and dynamic environment
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
