POSITION OVERVIEW

The Controls Engineer solves problems by applying industrial control technologies to a variety of fields, with an emphasis on energy systems. The position requires technical competence, creativity, attention to detail, self-direction, and a commitment to excellent customer service. The successful candidate will contribute to all phases of the project lifecycle, including:

  • Conceptual design
  • Control panel and network design
  • Equipment specification and procurement
  • Controller programming
  • HMI/SCADA development
  • Construction support and startup
  • Commissioning
  • Training
  • Ongoing maintenance and support 

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Prepare design documents: system architecture diagrams, schematic and panel layout drawings, installation drawings, functional descriptions, and equipment specifications.
  • Write and debug control logic for programmable logic controllers or similar platforms.
  • Develop applications using a variety of SCADA and HMI software.
  • Start up and troubleshoot new systems in the field, including controllers, networks, and instrumentation and control devices.
  • Commission and fine tune control systems, working individually or as a member of a team of other engineers, technicians, and contractors. Stay current on control system technologies and industry trends. Participate in internal and external training.
  • Learn to use new tools as technology and company needs evolve. Obtain and maintain technical certifications as needed. Additionally, this position will likely work to assist in the delivery of other Performance Group projects. This work will require, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Perform site visits to collect equipment information and assess system operations.
  • Analyze system operational performance and develop recommendations to improve operations and energy efficiency.
  • Support other Commissioning and Recommissioning activities.

Additionally, this position will likely work to assist in the delivery of other Performance Group projects. This work will require, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Perform site visits to collect equipment information and assess system operations.
  • Assist in performance of Test & Balance services.
  • Analyze system operational performance and develop recommendations to improve operations and energy efficiency.
  • Assist in utility analysis.
  • Support other Commissioning and Recommissioning activities.

EDUCATION

Bachelors’ degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is ideal. However, KFI is open to hiring the right candidate who may not have a formal Engineering degree, but has done work that has required interaction with contractors on a frequent basis (i.e. someone who has worked in one of the construction trades), or has experience designing building automation systems.

Requirements

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

The successful candidate will understand control system architecture and sequence of operation development, control panel layout/design, control logic development in PLC (Allen Bradley/Emerson) or DCS environments and HMI (Wonderware) system application development. Must have experience specifying instrumentation for flow, pressure, temperature and be capable of selecting and sizing modulating valves for steam and water applications. Other demonstrated capabilities include proficiency in written and verbal communications, ability to conduct client meetings and project presentations and excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills. This person will also be self-directed, but thrive in an environment where consultation and collaboration lead to superior outcomes. Finally, this person must also have the ability to quickly learn software applications relating to control systems.
