STScI is Hiring a Senior Software Engineer Near Baltimore, MD

Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA's flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland.Learn more about our missions.
This position can support hybrid work (only one day in the office, every quarter). Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV). This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
Software EngineerRole
The Data Management Division is hiring a SeniorSoftware Engineerin theScience Calibration Software Branch (SCSB )towork on libraries supporting the calibration pipelines and data analysis tools. TheSoftware Engineer will contribute to the effort to develop open source libraries for Astronomy in support of the JWST and Roman calibration pipelines.
Day to day in this role, you will work with developers at STScI and around the world to
-develop and maintain open source libraries, like astropy, gwcs and astropy affiliated packages

- develop and maintain the Advanced Scientific Data Format (ASDF)

- support STScI missions using the ASDF format
- optimize software for use with large data sets, including in the cloud environment
Qualifications:
- Strong experience in Python and at least one compiled language. You will be working mostly in Python though experience with C/C is beneficial.
- 5 years professional work experience in design and coding of software projects
- Experience with numerical computations
- Familiarity with I/O on large datasets
- Experience with coordinate transformations, projections or modeling software is a plus
- Familiarity with YAML, JSON, HDF5 or other data formats is a plus
- Experience with a distributed version control system, likeGIT, in a team environment
- Familiarity with open development environments is beneficial
- Strong teamwork, analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
The position requires aBachelor's degree in Astronomy or Physics or a comparable degree. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications will be considered.
Compensation is commensurate with education, skills and experience.
