What are the responsibilities and job description for the ANIMAL SHELTER ATTENDANT position at Jackson County?

Provide care for animals in the Jackson County Animal Shelter located on Spring Arbor Road. Assist the public with complaints, inquiries and adoptions. Provide daily nutrition and hygiene services, minor first aid, transfers, pre/post-op procedures and general post-op care. Shelter attendants also assist with facility custodial and grounds-keeping responsibilities. Wages increase to $17.72 on 1/1/2024.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position provides customer support services to Friend of the Court clientele, answering questions in person, by telephone, or by responding to mail and faxes. Reviews and processes court orders assuring proper actions have been taken and credit given. Provides a variety of other support services to Friend of the Court staff.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:
1. Answer personal and telephone inquiries; see clients in person on a walk-in basis. Answers procedural questions, explains medical demand process and may assist clients with paperwork. Responds to other agency inquiries (employers, Dept. of Health & Human Services, Prosecutors, County Clerk, private attorneys, judges, etc.)
2. Processes and reviews orders of the court ensuring proper actions were taken and credited.
3. Performs MiCSES reconciliation processes including preparing bank deposit and processing EFT monies, credit card payments and any other debit or credits to the FOC Child Support Bank account. Contacts bank and clients regarding NSF checks and monitors collection of same. Makes NSF referrals to Prosecuting Attorney as required.
4. Receives all payments, including bonds, from multiple sources and posts them to the computer system
5. Prepares bench warrants for LEIN.
6. Serves as a mandated reporter for CPS.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Assists in the operations of the animal shelter and performs a variety of support functions. Handles and cares for animals delivered to the shelter including assessing the general health and behavior of the animals. Performs or assists with euthanasia of animals. Assists in the maintenance and cleaning of the shelter and shelter vehicles. Guides the general public through the adoption process and assists the Veterinary Technician with a variety of tasks. Performs a variety of other tasks related to shelter operations. Some of the essential functions include:

1. Cares for all animals housed at the shelter, ensuring that food and water is provided and that vaccines and medications are administered. May administer minor first aid treatment.

2. Assists in removing animals from live traps and vehicles.

3. Serves as a member of the euthanasia team, working with the Veterinary Technician to identify animals to be euthanized. Conducts euthanasia and/or assists in restraining animals for the euthanasia process. Removes animal heads for rabies testing.

4. Cleans and disinfects euthanasia area after performing the procedure.

5. Performs an initial assessment of the general health and condition of animals brought to the Shelter. May determine the immediate disposal of animals that are injured or vicious. Monitors animals for sickness and behavioral nature. Communicates medical issues to the Veterinary Technician as needed.

6. Cleans and disinfects all areas of the Animal Shelter including the kennels. Sweeps and mops floors and performs other custodial tasks. Cleans water pans and food buckets. Cleans and sanitizes animal control vehicles.

7. Oversees probationers, summer youth, volunteers and other program workers in kennel cleaning and maintenance, and feeding and caring for the animals. Trains workers on animal care and use of chemical cleaning and disinfectant products.

8. Performs minor maintenance to animal control facility and equipment including fixing fencing, cages, water troughs, feeders and other equipment.

9. Performs maintenance to animal shelter grounds, includes raking, shoveling driveways of snow, and related tasks.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

This is a non-exempt bargaining unit position with AFSCME, Pay Grade D, offering excellent benefits, including investment plan options, PTO accrual and PAID HOLIDAYS UPON HIRE! All other benefits including use of accrued PTO and insurance (medical/prescription/dental/vision/life and disability insurance) effective following 90 days of employment and successfully passing the probationary period.

The Employee contribution for the RHS Plan is $850 annually with an employer contribution of $1,950 annually.
