About Weld-On:
Weld-On Adhesives, the largest subsidiary of IPS Corporation, is the pioneer and leading manufacturer of WeldOn® solvent cements, primers and cleaners for PVC, CPVC, ABS and other plastic piping systems. Weld-On products are globally recognized as the premium products for joining plastic pipes and fittings and are used by professional installers around the world in a variety of applications such as, but not limited to, construction (residential & commercial), industrial (chemical process, water treatment, mining, etc.), irrigation (landscaping & agricultural) and others. Headquartered in California, Weld-On has state-of-the-art operations throughout the United States, as well as China, and a worldwide network of sales representatives and distributors.
About the Role:
Reporting directly to the President of the Weld-On Division, the Director, R&D will take a leading role in product and process development for this growing division. This position will be responsible for developing and refining cements and/or adhesives that contribute to Weld-On’s aggressive product development and business growth strategy, while also refining processes and evaluating and implementing new technologies. This is a highly visible position, as the Director, R&D will work closely with people throughout the organization (Sales, Marketing, Operations and other departments) to conceive of, develop and commercialize product opportunities. These projects will be for pipe joining and other plastic applications worldwide and for all markets including Irrigation, Industrial, Plumbing, Pool & Spa and Electrical.
The successful candidate will actively participate in multifunctional teams, and closely work with operations, sales, marketing and procurement. Specifically, this person will be expected to achieve the following:
  • Direct technology solutions to meet requirements/opportunities presented by Sales/Marketing
  • Work with manufacturing to improve chemical process reliability
  • Evaluate new materials and new technologies to achieve the most efficient and effective manufacturing processes
  • Ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget and in compliance with company, regulatory and customer requirements
  • Ensure the successful development and commercialization of several significant new products or new product applications per year
  • Manage the development of these product ideas into well thought out projects and business cases by showing active leadership and drive
  • Participate in customer visits, both in the US and globally, to develop existing or new product development opportunities
  • As research projects progress toward commercialization, take a leadership role in the transfer of process and technical knowledge to production
  • Evaluate the R&D department structure and continually strives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the group
  • Manage capital expenses related to process and product improvements
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis of industry and technical advancements
  • Ensure safe R&D operations; maintain visibility in the lab and ensure that all relevant safety processes are being utilized
  • Ensure all certifications are current and all documentation is well-maintained
Qualifications and Experience
  • An advanced degree in chemical engineering or chemistry or similar; an MBA is a plus.
  • At least twenty years of progressive product development or chemical processing leadership, preferably in coatings, adhesives, inks or related industries, with at least 10 years of managing others.
  • Strong physical property and chemical testing understanding with experience in organic and reactive chemistry.
  • Capability to conceive and recognize inventions and protect them with trade secret vs. patent application decisions. This includes follow up with entire patent development process.
  • Verifiable track record of success in developing new, innovative products and applications and managing resources to ensure successful development and production of new products and applications.
  • Demonstrated background in polymer chemistry/science, preferably including education/practical experience with polymer solutions and sophisticated polymer/solvent, adhesive, or coating interactions.
  • Prior experience working in a fast-paced, high-performance, high-expectation, high-accountability operating culture is desirable.

  • Sense of Urgency / Bias for Action: The Director, R&D will be self-directed with an inherent ability to get things done, both personally and through the effort of others. The successful candidate will exhibit a strong sense of urgency and bias for action, as opposed to over-thinking or overplanning. Done intelligently, not recklessly, this action orientation, coupled with an ability to quickly adjust course as needed, drives agility.
  • Results Orientation / Personal Accountability: The Director, R&D will place a premium value on results, not activity or effort, with a bias for driving breakthrough performance, not incremental gain. The successful candidate will reflect a high degree of personal accountability, ownership and integrity.
