GENERAL SUMMARY:

Provides individualized, high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages. Uses a team approach to delegate and coordinate patient care at admission, recovery, transfer, and discharge. Serves the populations ranging from infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. 

This position has a hiring range of $31.01-$34.11 per hours based on relative years experience to the job.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPONSIBILIES:

  •  Communicate effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families and other health care team members.
  • Conduct assessments according to facility guidelines. 
  •  Administers nursing care to patients; includes assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the patient’s care plan in coordination with the physician.
  •  Provides nursing care guided by physician orders, unit protocols and professional judgment.
  •  Communicates effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families and other healthcare team members.
  • Participates in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional issues.
  •  Contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues by sharing knowledge and skills.
  •  Delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights.
  • Considers factors relating to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning/delivering patient care.
  • Provides patient/family or caregiver education and counseling in recognition and solution of physical, emotional, and environmental health problems.
  •  Utilizes hospital information system to process orders/data and retrieve patient information.
  •  Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patients’ records.
  •  Participates in the performance improvement process. Assists with regulatory compliance throughout the organization. 
  •  Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.
  •  Provides nursing care guided by physician orders, unit protocols and professional judgment.
  •  Works independently with limited direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment.
  •  Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices).
  •  Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).
  •  Complies with OSHA/JCAHO and other regulatory agency recommendations and guidelines. 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager, including staff cross training. 
  • Assists in maintenance of physician's preference cards 
  •  Participate in maintenance of unit resource materials.
  •  Assists with clerical duties (i.e., maintenance of charge, patient record, answering phones and call lights, processing physician orders.
  •  Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, and environment.
  •  Provides orientation/education for staff, students, and other hospital and community organizations as requested.
  •  Supports and participates in departmental Performance Improvement projects. 
  •  Attends departmental and other meetings as assigned. 

Requirements

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  •  R.N. with license to practice in State of Iowa.
  •  Mandatory reporting course within previous 5 years within 3 months of hire
  • IV skill preferred. 
  •  Knowledge of perioperative services. 
  •  Maintains BLS qualification or obtained within 6 months of hire
  • Maintains ACLS qualification, or obtains within 6 months of hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified or obtained within six (6) months of hire for PACU only.
  •  Ability to read, write and speak English language. 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.Standing: Maintaining an upright position.Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.Fingering: Writing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word­­—those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range; ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when auscultating and percussing.Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motion) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Frequent:

 Balancing: Maintaining equilibrium to prevent falling when assisting patients with activity.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist (for example, emptying suction canister that are below waist level or obtaining supplies from low shelves).

Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest or kneel.

Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine (for example, emptying foley bag attached to bed frame)

Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips and palms

Occasional:

Climbing: Stairs, stools, ramps.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 lbs. push/pull (force to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.

VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Ability to accurately prepare and read written documentation. 
  •  Ability to utilize computer terminal.
  •  Good hand-eye coordination including the ability to work with small items i.e. suture, etc.
  •  Peripheral vision
  •  Ability to read pertinent printed and electronic material and distinguish colors.
  • §Ability to include inspection during patient assessment.
  •  Ability to accurately read measurements on patient related equipment—some examples include: thermometers, mechanical gauges, glucometers, IV pumps, and computer monitor displays.

INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Ability to maintain a high standard of courtesy and cooperation (service excellence) in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors, and perform job functions satisfactorily despite the stress of an outpatient surgery environment.
  • Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
  •  Adaptability to situations requiring the precise attainment of set limits and standards.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for the direction or planning of an activity but also to work independently.
  • Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are vital aspects of the job.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:

  • Standard patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation, sterilization equipment, phone, computer terminal, general office equipment, and written materials. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  •  The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
  •  Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with all its specifications for preventing contact with the above materials.
  •  The worker is subject to noise from various types of surgical equipment. 
  • The worker is subject to vibration (drills, saws, etc.)
  •  The worker is subject to hazards from electrical equipment, mechanical parts, needles, etc. 
  • The worker is subject to gases and fumes. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Nurse Manager under direction of the Director of Surgery
  • Has no responsibility for leading or following-up on the work of others.
