International House is Hiring a Resident Services Manager Near Berkeley, CA

About the Position:

Promotes I-House community development philosophy, communicates I-House policies and procedures, explains House services and responds to internal and external inquiries. Performs resident outreach. Responsible for promoting a positive residential experience for every person living at International House, and for the safety and security of approximately 600 residents. Advises and regularly meets with residents to address personal and residential life issues, provides follow up, intervenes during residential crisis situations, responsible for providing intercultural conflict mediation and resolution, and conducts resident judicial misconduct reviews that are in violation of I-House and University community standards. Exercises mature judgment in crisis and confidential residential life situations to determine appropriate action. Works closely and in collaboration with a variety of campus entities.

Responsible for planning and coordinating of First Aid, CPR Training, and twice-annual mandatory Disaster Survival trainings for all staff at International House and is directly involved in the development of the house’s Emergency Preparedness Plan. Responsible for updating and revising the publication of the annual I-House Resident Handbook. Responsible for direct supervision, recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating Resident Assistants (RA’s), student workers, and Health Workers in partnership with the Tang Center, who directly supervises the health workers. Determines goals for the department, counsels and evaluate staff performance. Responsible for performance management of staff, including taking corrective action as needed. Evaluates and recommends changes to programs, policies and procedures when improvement is needed.

Serves as a resource to the residents. Demonstrates a working knowledge of campus departments and their services and functions in order to provide general information and referrals. Demonstrates working knowledge of and specialization in Student Affairs and Student Life and the ability in social perceptiveness to be aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react the way they do. Ability in problem identification, reasoning and the ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, to persuade leadership, and intercultural competence.

The position acts as a mediator in conflict resolution situations when needed related to such matters as: noise disruptions, floor disputes, crisis intervention and unauthorized gatherings. Also, responsible for ensuring that I-House Community Standards, (i.e. the rules and regulations provided to residents) are well-communicated and understood. One of the primary goals of this position is to focus on building rapport, engaging with students and providing a professional point of contact for residents during the evening hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct supervision, guidance and direction to the Resident Assistant.
  • Oversees the work of two to four Health Workers in partnership with the Health Center. During student affairs/student life crisis situations identifies issues, intervenes and advises staff, develops contingency plans, works closely with emergency campus entities, provides follow-up services and exercises sound judgment and discretion, which reflects International House management policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and ability to evaluate risks and likelihood of consequences with crisis situations.
  • Performs evacuation and direction in case of fire alarms, work with Fire Marshal to implement mandated fire drills, educates residents in emergency procedures such as earthquakes, fire, bomb threats as well as communicates with appropriate colleagues for physical operations malfunctions.
  • Maintains relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders important to program success and students’ well-being. In the event of long-term evacuation, facilitates the identification of emergency housing for residents and develop and maintain a roster of their whereabouts.
  • Serves as the primary contact for Fire, UC Police Department, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Office of Student Conduct, OPHD, Sexual Assault and Harassment Office, and the Disability Compliance Office.
  • Oversees and provides guidance to student staff to distribute information bulletins as they relate to House safety and security.
  • Coordinates First Aid/CPR training as needed. Initiate and plan emergency preparedness exercises such as setting up annual house fire alarm drills at I-House in conjunction with the Fire Marshal. May be expected to maintain on-call duties and return to House, if at all possible, to assist with resident emergencies and crisis situations.
  • Oversees students conduct at I-House and exercises judicial action in consultation with I-House Director of Housing Operations. When appropriate, works in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Oversees and monitors career and student staff performance and provides direction and assistance.
  • Meets regularly with staff to provide coaching and counseling. When appropriate, this is done in close consultation with the Human Resources Director and Director of Operations.
  • Conducts regular needs assessment and evaluation in all areas of responsibility: safety, security, conflict mediation, crisis intervention, resident discipline, community development, staff training, staff work schedules, administrative tasks, budget, emergency response, etc.
  • Recommends methods for improvement, write reports and make proposals.
  • Responsible for periodic review, editing and updating the I-House Resident Handbook annually.
  • Acts as the Coordinator of Special Housing Accommodations requests for residents with disabilities to ensure that I-House is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Follow up with residents to ensure that they continue to receive appropriate accommodations.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication and multitasking.
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs; i.e., Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population, especially in the areas of residential life, including advising techniques.
  • Strong skills on multicultural conflict mediation and resolution and crisis intervention.
  • Strong ability to multitask, work independently under pressure, and with un-flexible deadlines.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure in difficult situations that require mature judgment and strict confidentiality.
  • Skills and knowledge on program planning, implementation, and facilitation.
  • Skills on budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Attention to detail, verbal and written communication, organization, and ability to develop standardized administrative procedures.
  • Ability to solve problems, use reasoning, and develop original ideas.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field: i.e., Student Affairs/Residential Life, Education, Social Justice and/or equivalent experience and training.
  • Minimum of 5 years professional residential life experience in a college/university setting.
  • Multicultural Conflict Mediation Certification desired.
  • Required work schedule Tuesday – Saturday 11:00am – 8:00pm
