International High School of New Orleans is Hiring an Academic Counselor Near orleans, LA

Under the leadership of the principal the Counselor designs, implements, and monitors a
comprehensive developmentally appropriate guidance and counseling program that addresses
the academic career, and personal/social development for all students. Utilizing leadership,
advocacy, and collaboration, the Counselor promotes student success, provides
preventative services, and response to identified student needs.
The major functions of the Counselor are to incorporate the Louisiana State Board of
Education priorities of high student performance, healthy students in safe orderly and caring
schools, quality teachers, administrators, staff, and community.

Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesCulture, Ethics, and Integrity● Understands, communicates, and exemplifies the goals and vision of the
organization and the Head of School’s Office.
● Contributes to and maintains the organization’s culture and identity, using the
organization’s Core Values as a guide.
● Helps create an environment and culture that enables the organization to fulfill its
mission by meeting and exceeding its annual and long-term goals by: conveying
the school’s mission to all staff, motivating and providing staff with resources
required to improve performance, and holding staff accountable to performance
standards.

Operational Leadership● Oversee assigned departmental responsibilities for the purpose of achieving
outcomes in relation to organizational objectives and ensuring compliance to
legal requirements.
● Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with the
requirements of the law.
● Work closely with 504, IEP, and ELL Coordinators to ensure testing is done
effectively and students are receiving appropriate accommodations, and
ensure IGPs are up to date in accordance to 504 and IEP.
● Promote an understanding and appreciation for diverse populations
● Make yourself a visible presence in school by participating in a variety of
activities that contribute to the school's effectiveness.
● Counsels students concerning academic programming, personal growth, and
development.
● Demonstrates appropriate and effective student management.
● Coordinate LEAP and End of course exams, and alternative assessment cycles
to ensure school and individual teacher and student compliance.
● Maintains records pertinent to students scholastic and personal
development.
● Demonstrates ability in planning, organizing, and implementing appropriate
programs focused on system support.
● Collect and analyze data to guide program direction and emphasis.
● Implements an effective referral and follow up process.
● Continually plan, evaluate, and revise the school counseling program.
● Provide individual and small group academic counseling as needed.
● Conducts a yearly program audit to review the extent of program
implementation.

Resource Management● Refers students who require additional services to appropriate personnel within
and outside the school.
● Provides guidance, support, referral, and tutorial services to ensure students stay in
high school and complete graduation requirements.
● Provides appropriate information to staff related to the school counseling program.
● Prepare students for transition to the next level (high school to college).
● Pursue continuous professional development and growth.

Advocacy● Serves as non-authoritarian liaison among the students, faculty/staff, and
administrators.
F. Other
● Adhere to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor
associations.
● Adhere to best practices prescribed by state and national school counselor
associations.
● Demonstrate knowledge of local policies and state and federal laws
pertaining to school counseling.

Minimum QualificationsEducation & ExperienceMaster’s degree in counseling. Licensed as a professional counselor by the state of Louisiana
Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners., or working towards licensure as a
Professional Counselor approved by the State of Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors
Board of Examiners as a counselor intern. Strong interpersonal, communication, and
organizational skills; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse population.

SkillsKnowledge of relevant technology. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong
organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines. Thinks and acts in ways that respect
ethnic cultural and language diversity. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe and Internet

Applications. Able to function as part of a team. Ability to communicate
effectively both orally and in writing with parents, schools, community, and office personnel.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with callers and guests, attend to their requests in a
timely and empathetic manner, and calmly handle several
responsibilities at a time. Ability to work a flexible schedule with evening and weekend hours
is required.

Work ConditionsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk three flights
of stairs, stand and talk or hear and sometimes sit for extended periods of time. The employee is
occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, couch, or crawl. While
performing the duties of the job the employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or
typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.
