Improve Your Tomorrow, Inc. (IYT) is a college access and completion nonprofit focused on increasing the number of young men of color to attend and graduate from colleges and universities. IYT’s vision is a nation where young men of color are overrepresented in higher education, underrepresented in the criminal justice system and are leaders in their communities. We are one of the country's largest education non profit agencies serving young men of color, with nearly 4,000 students in Northern California and college students across the nation.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Chief Financial and Administration Officer (CFAO) the Staff Accountant assists, supports, and maintains the bookkeeping and accounting functions of the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares consolidated internal and external financial statements by gathering and analyzing information from the general ledger system and from departments.
  • Prepares and maintains grants receivable and grant expense reporting. Supports organization’s ongoing compliance with grants.
  • Prepares general ledger entries by maintaining records and files; reconciling accounts.
  • Prepares payments by accruing expenses; assigning account numbers and requesting disbursements.
  • Post payroll entry to general ledger on a bi-weekly basis
  • Post journal entries to general ledger
  • Analyzes information and options by developing spreadsheet reports; verifying information.
  • Answers accounting and financial questions from staff by researching and interpreting data.
  • Protects the organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Monitor compliance with organization policies and procedures
  • Manage employee expense reimbursement and the corporate credit program via Tallie, a third-party expense management system
  • Assist with preparation and execution of annual audit, with a focus on receivable schedules and analysis
  • Collaborate with the Accounting Manager & CFAO to develop and monitor accounts receivable policies and procedures
  • Maintain fixed asset schedule
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organizations.
  • Develops and implements accounting procedures recommendations by analyzing current procedures; recommending changes.
  • Accomplishes accounting and organization mission by completing related tasks as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Experience and knowledge with nonprofit finance and accounting practices
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Good problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to carry out instructions provided either in writing or orally
  • Ability to self-motivate to achieve results
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and produce quality results
  • Ability to attend 2-3 mandatory weekend work events per year.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required.
  • 3 years of accounting experience.

Computer Skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, and accounting software.

Schedule: Full-time

Salary: $65,000-$70,000 per year. Benefits include vision, health, dental, 403(b) retirement with 3% employer match after one year of employment, 2 weeks of accrued paid vacation and paid time off for school breaks.
