What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Veterinarian position at Humane Society of Southwest Missouri?
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
· Perform spay/neuter surgical procedures
o Follow standardized surgical and anesthetic techniques and protocols
o Adopt and abide by all standards for patient care and surgery
o Oversee all aspects of assigned patients, including (but not limited to): physical examination; surgery; pre- and post-operative care; anesthetic protocols; patient monitoring and emergency response
o Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances
o Supervise post-operative rechecks and order of medical treatments, as necessary, to ensure complete surgical recovery
· Responsible for the following daily objectives of animal care
o Collaborate with Executive Director and other department supervisors to ensure a productive and efficient work environment that maximizes animal flow and minimizes length of stay.
o Assist in creating standard operating procedures relating to daily animal care
o Ensure animal care issues are resolved
o Maintain high team morale while promoting individual growth and development.
o Assess patients and create treatment plans, which minimize costs while ensuring proper standards of care
o Communicate with outside veterinary clinics regarding ongoing patient care or adverse events
o Keep Executive Director apprised of any critical or unusual issues regarding patient care.
o Communicate with Executive Director any issues regarding staff or patients.
o Communicate with Executive Director any issues regarding infectious disease outbreaks and control, surgical protocols and other medical issues.
o Ensure highest quality of care and cleaning according to industry best practices
o Perform veterinary consults with adopters regarding any medical issues
o Assist in recheck exams for foster animals, create a treatment plan and communicate with foster families when needed
o Willingness to participate in shelter medicine continuing education off hours through ASPCApro, Maddie’s Fund and others.
o Willingness to research and implement cost saving protocols, which are supported by veterinary shelter medicine experts.
o Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to fulfill the organization’s mission.
o Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Pay: $62,665.16 - $159,744.54 per year
