Job Summary:

The Simulation Engineer will work to create dynamic simulations of hydraulic components, valves, controllers, and systems to support various customers. This will include external customers working on building machines using Sun components and internal customers working on new product development, systems engineering, and first pass yield improvements. This will require an understanding of the modeling fidelity needed for the customer to complete their tasks. Controller design work will be supporting research activities, new product development, and system integration. This will require hands on work with equipment in both laboratory and at customer sites to support new product development and system integration.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and 1-D Simulation/plant analysis of hydraulic components, valves, and systems
• Conduct research projects to improve simulation capabilities using advanced techniques
• Design high-fidelity system simulation capable of predicting valve/system pre-deployment performance
• Perform trade studies and simulation analyses with the objective of enhancing and optimizing valve/system performance capability

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Capability to carry through the complete project from conception to final sign-off by the customer
• Must be willing to get out from behind a desk and work hands on using basic hand tools and electrical instruments in our Test Lab or outside on equipment
• Ability to work cross functionally with various groups in the Engineering department
• Proficient with two of the three simulation technologies listed below:
  • FEA
    • ANSYS and Creo Simulation preferred
  • CFD
    • Siemens Star CCM preferred
  • Plant/Mathematical modeling - Simscape or AMEsim preferred
• Familiarity with any of the simulation technologies listed below preferred:
  • Fatigue Life Analysis
  • Accelerated Life Testing
  • Simulation/DOE Optimizers
  • Control System Design

Education and Experience:

• B.S. degree in mechanical, mechatronics, or electrical engineering required
  • Prefer advanced degree but experience in dynamic simulations and control design will be considered
• Education or experience with hydraulic system design and valve design preferred
  • Cartridge valve development experience is advantageous
• Very good understanding of classical control systems is preferred (PI, PID for SISO; frequency domain, Nyquist, Bode, feedback and feed forward, etc.)
• Knowledge of machine learning principles and application with Python or R preferred. Preference given for applying these principles to predictive maintenance or failure prediction.
• Good understanding of modern control systems preferred (State space, LQR, adaptive, etc. for MIMO, etc.)
• C/C and micro-controller programming experience is advantageous
