Accounts Receivable Specialist
Admin Building - Fulltime (Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm)
SUMMARY:
With knowledge of the FQHC billing requirements, the Accounts Receivable Specialist will prepare, submit, and follow up on all patient statements and insurance claims to third party payers for all patients who receive care from both medical and dental providers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews all claims before submission to insurance companies.
  • Maintains file system for billed claim records and back up for audit purposes.
  • Verifies coverage and follows up on submitted claims.
  • Requests corrected diagnosis for reimbursement purposes from physicians, dentists, and mid-levels.
  • Responds knowledgeably to inquiries from patients, physicians, insurance companies regarding covered charges, remittance advices, and billing questions.
  • Works with Medicaid, Medicare, UGS, and secondary insurance companies for submission of claims, to verify coverage, to determine status of claims, and to resolve issues and problems with the claims.
  • Reviews incoming correspondence and materials.
  • Maintains a variety of files, logs, and registers.
  • Reviews insurance information in computer registration to determine accuracy and make changes as needed.
  • Operates copier, fax machine, typewriters, and other office equipment.
  • Works with CFO in the maintenance, upkeep and distribution of billing policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
  • Opens mail and processes all patient payments, insurance reimbursements, and reconciles daily report with checks received.
  • Maintains updated knowledge of FQHC billing rules, CPT, CDT, and ICD-10 coding.
  • Assists in the orientation of new clerical staff teaching those computer processes involved in collecting accurate information to ensure timely reimbursement. As requested, participates in general or special assignments.
  • Updates fee scale yearly based on Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • Effectively works with Medical Office Coordinator and Dental Director to insure that all clerical workers are updated on changes related to billing, coding, insurances, sliding fee scale, etc.
  • Works to ensure all practice management problems are submitted, processed, and resolved.
  • Fills in for clerical staff as needed to ensure proper staffing of patient care areas.
  • Actively participates in the Quality Improvement Program and on other committees as needed.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality according to health center policy and HIPAA regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Associate degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred.
  • Three years demonstrated office, hospital, or clinical billing preferred.
  • Understanding of different types of insurance (Medicaid, Medicare, Commercial, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Medicare/covered/non-covered charges.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Computer experience, skill and typing ability sufficient to operate the MDSERVE system.
  • Skill and capability to function effectively and calmly in an unpredictable and often stressful environment.
  • Ability to work easily and in a friendly manner with the general public and occasionally handle the hostile or disgruntled patient.
