HAWAII GAS is Hiring a Service Technician II Near Honolulu, HI

Overview

Performs as a skilled technician following specific policies/procedures/methods in responding to written/verbal instructions regarding the installation, testing, repair and adjusting of all types/models of gas utilization appliances/equipment and systems for residential and commercial users.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and tests appliances, equipment, and associated systems on customers' premises to activate service or determine cause of complaint. Ensures correct metering (delivery) pressure is documented on service order. Checks high pressure service for dust, water or plug. When major repairs or parts are necessary, discusses with customer the repairs and costs as set forth in the stock parts price manual and special-order parts, using current labor rates; initiates service orders. Uses human senses, leak detecting solution, and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detector, manometer, pressure gauge to detect problem. If a problem is detected and cannot be repaired immediately, issues an unsatisfactory condition report and explains to the customer what needs to be done. Refers more difficult tasks or work orders to or collaborates the repair with the Customer Service Foreman.
  • Fixes the problem: Cleans, adjusts, repairs, changes or replaces burners, pilot lights, controls, baffle, appliance valves, appliance regulators, defective or old age meters, or any other part, mechanism or electronic device pertaining to the operation of appliances, equipment and systems. Uses leak detecting solution and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detector, manometer, pressure gauge to verify that the problem has been corrected.
  • Locks, unlocks, reads, changes and removes meters; initiates plugged service. Investigates high bill complaints and completes service orders as to work performed. Collects money on C.O.D. orders and plug meter orders; properly accounts for revenues collected and delivers money to Dispatcher or Cashier.
  • Functions as a first responder in gas related situations such as fires, leaks, broken pipes and explosions. Performs necessary emergency repairs and applies stopper or other approved method when necessary to secure leak. Sets-up hot zones, directs all personnel at the emergency site and stands-by at the site when necessary until properly relieved by appropriate personnel. Communicates all findings to dispatcher.
  • Provides and extends at all times a courteous and tactful demeanor when dealing with all customers or the public. Advises or instructs consumer in the proper and efficient operation of their appliances/equipment.
  • Drives Company vehicle and maintains necessary supplies and equipment needed to perform duties.
  • Performs clerical/administrative duties such as preparing reports, inputting data into the computer, etc.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner. Complies with and where required enforces all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and established/adopted by the Company. Cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety, safe work habits and good housekeeping to include the reporting and rectifying, as qualified, any unsafe conditions or act. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Qualifications

    All newly hired employees for this position will go through Company-sponsored Training. Service Technician Training and Field Evaluation Programs which may include 1) guided ride-a longs with senior technicians 2) Operator Qualification training and testing, 3) and 3) familiarization with gas basics and testing procedures, etc. Weekly meetings and quarterly evaluations will determine satisfactory progression and advancement in grade levels. 

    Required Education and/or Work Experience:

    • Must have satisfactorily completed the in-house or Company-sponsored Service Technician training and Field Evaluation Programs; must pass continuing refresher courses.
    • At least three years of successful and progressive experience in the job duties described of which two years must have been as a Service Technician III; these experience requirements may be reduced at management’s sole discretion based on need and for the individual who demonstrates exceptional ability and skills to perform the duties of Service Technician II with the approval of the V.P. Human Resources.
    • The individual must have demonstrated the knowledge and ability to effectively install, repair, test and adjust gas appliances, equipment and systems and have a work record of dealing tactfully and courteously with customers.
    • Possesses a very good working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures, permanent codes, regulations, standards and safety rules/regulations/practices in addition to standard practices and procedures for this trade.
    • Very proficient in the proper use of tools, materials and equipment of the trade and have a good safety record.
    • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws.
    • Ability to use two-way communications radio, computer and other office equipment.

    Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

    • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.

    Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

    • Must have valid Hawaii driver’s license and have a clean traffic abstract or and abstract that is acceptable to Human Resources.
    • Must posses or be able to secure and maintain required security clearances such as AOA, TWIC and MARSEC. Failure to secure and maintain these certifications will disqualify employee for this position and may lead to termination.

    Communication/Competency/Skill Requirements:

    • Reports for duty in prescribed uniform and works with appropriate PPEs.
    • Always presents as neat and clean an appearance as job conditions will permit.
    • Must have pleasing personality and be courteous and tactful in handling all customers.
    • Must carefully observe all safety measures and shall not have an unsatisfactory work history of accidents.
    • Flexible and adaptable to changes within the position/department/company.
    • Able to steward themselves in a professional and courteous manner to promote a harmonious working environment.
    • Able to communicate professionally, courteously, and effectively utilizing standards means of communication within the workplace (i.e., verbal, written, e-mail, phone, text, etc.).

    Working Conditions/Environment/Physical Demands:

    • Works indoors and outdoors; crawls under houses and worked in confined spaces.
    • Degree to which exposed to gas fumes varies from light to an occasional heavy concentration requiring the use of a gas respirator.
    • Subject to work at nights, on weekends, holidays, to include emergency callouts.
    • Good physical condition to perform the requirements of the job and maintain certification/qualification/license.
    • No back or serious eye limitation including color blindness or restriction on respirator use; must have a keen sense of smell.
    • Must not have claustrophobia.
    • Work involves moderate to heavy degree of physical effort; e.g. to move ranges, refrigerators, tanks, etc.
