SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Cord Blood Bank Coordinator position is to participate in the activities related to recruitment and enrollment, donor screening and cord blood collection, from expectant mothers, to either the public cord blood unrelated donation program or the related program delivering at non-fixed or fixed collection sites. Participate in data entry into databases and review of collection data and donor files. Assist in handling confirmatory testing and shipping requests for cord blood units for transplantation.

**This will be a full-time position working a variable shift (with possible weekends). Work location is varied based on business need.**

KEY FUNCTIONS

Communication, Education, Recruitment and Donor Suitability

a. Coordinate orientation and training of new staff and monitor competency of current cord blood collection staff; maintain appropriate records and documentation.
b. Participate in developing collection staff work schedules.
c. Train new Cord Blood Bank Collection staff in all activities related to cord blood donation, including donor recruitment, donor screening, cord blood collection, short-term storage and transport of cord blood donations to the processing facility.
d. Act as a mentor Cord Blood Bank Collection staff
e. Promote growth of collection team and good working practices
f. Provide support and knowledge to onsite collection team
g. Disseminate information acting as a liaison between office and collection site.
h. Promote, educate and recruit potential donor mothers: through explanation of the cord blood donation program to expectant mothers and participation in hospital programs directed towards pregnant mothers. Perform initial screen to identify suitable potential cord blood donor mothers.
i. Explain the donation program.
j. Obtain informed consent from all potential cord blood donor mothers for the collection, testing and use of the cord blood.
k. Evaluate donors for suitability to donate infant’s cord blood 
l. Interview donor mothers to obtain answers to a standard questionnaire designed to elicit behavioral risk factors, medical and travel history information of the donor mother and infant’s immediate family.
m. Communication and with potential donor mothers/families, hospital staff and team members
n. Must have excellent verbal communication skills
o. Train obstetricians in the in-utero collection technique, including retraining as required, and monitoring of competency on an annual basis.
p. Participate in the education of hospital staff.

Product, Samples and Records Management

a. Use various computer systems and databases to enter, retrieve and compile data, complete donor record and productivity reports for review by CBB Manager and Assistant Directors.
b. Collect data relevant to collection site activities.
c. Responsible for the collection of cord blood and maternal blood samples using aseptic techniques
a. Collect cord blood ex-utero in the dedicated collection room
b. Assist and/or prepare the supplies for the obstetricians performing in-utero collections
c. Collect and/or facilitate drawing of maternal blood samples
d. Prepare the cord blood donations, maternal samples and paperwork for transportation to the Cord Blood Bank on pre-arranged schedules
e. Utilize various computer systems and databases to enter data and complete donor mother and donor infant records.
f. Review hospital charts.
g. Must have good organizational skills
h. Must pay attention to detail.
i. Must have good writing skills.

Quality Control Compliance

a. Ensure collection sites are in compliance and operate according to regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines set by CBB, MDA, and regulatory and accreditation agencies.
b. Demonstrate and maintain extensive working and theoretical knowledge of cord blood donation; including donor recruitment, donor screening, cord blood collection, storage and transport.
c. Maintain and apply knowledge of the broader aspects of cord blood banking.
d. Perform procedures and maintain accurate documentation in compliance with current Good Laboratory Practice, current Good Manufacturing Practice and current Good Tissue Practice regulations and applicable accreditation agency standards, including but not limited to FACT-NetCord, CAP and CLIA
e. Participate in creation, revision, and updates to CBB policies and procedures relevant to collection.
f. Monitor daily functions of the CBB collection room, including data and records management, inventory management, ordering and logging of supplies and reagents, cleaning, temperature monitoring, ancillary office and administrative functions.
g. Monitor quality control and documentation of all equipment, reagents and supplies that are used for cord blood collection.
h. Document deviations and events; notify technical and quality management personnel in timely manner and assist in the investigation of the cause and any required corrective actions.

Other duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE
Required: Three years of experience in cord blood collection administration or laboratory. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred: Lead Cord Blood Collector experience at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
